CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

CASSIDY

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2023 9:55 P.M.

Cassidy paced the kitchen, listening as Detective Lewis questioned August about the women on his list. It amazed her how cavalier he was about these relationships, the risks he took. The first woman, Aubree—from their dentist’s office!—pregnant. She was sleeping with her ex and August, presumably both without condoms. And Cassidy was drawn into this sick, what would it be, quadruple? All sharing the same…fluids? She felt dirty. Wanted a shower. If Daisy wasn’t missing, she’d drive to the ER and demand an STD test.

Two other women with late periods. Possible early miscarriages? Another where the condom broke. Possibly pregnant? Did her husband have superhuman sperm? That wasn’t Cassidy’s experience. With both kids, they tried for nearly a year, having sex when she was ovulating, not doing it two days before ovulation so his sperm would be potent—

She stopped pacing and glared at him. He averted his eyes. Was he cheating while they were trying? Wasting his good sperm? Was that why it took so long to get pregnant? She got the leftovers? The lazy swimmers?

“As far as you know, you have not fathered any children other than Piper and Daisy?” Detective Lewis asked.

“No,” August said. “Like I said, maybe Aubree lied because she was getting back with her ex and didn’t want to deal with custody issues. But it’s been years, so I highly doubt she came back now.”

Cassidy zipped up her sweatshirt and then smoothed it out over the high waist of her yoga pants, trying to camouflage her postpartum roll. Aubree was curvy, wore tons of makeup, had cosmetic “help.” Was that what August wanted? Injections, fillers, and breast augmentations? Were the rest of his women Kardashian worshipers?

“Did any of them take the breakup particularly hard?” Detective Lewis asked.

“None of them were happy.” He paused. Difficult to organize his thoughts, she imagined, when he had a cheerleading squad of women to run through. “I don’t know if they stayed upset for long, though. Once I broke up with them, that’s it.” August cut his hand through the air. “It’s over. I don’t let it get complicated.”

Cassidy laughed. “I’m sorry…” Her laughing fit hit harder, making her stomach ache. She braced a hand against the island. “You cheat. On your wife. And children.” The laughter abruptly stopped as she digested her words. “You live a double life. Isn’t that the definition of complicated?”

“I meant—”

“Oh, I know what you meant,” Cassidy said. Did he think sex was equivalent to a handshake? She gave herself to August exclusively. No flirtations, friendships, fantasies with other men. How did he cross the line, repeatedly, without feeling guilty?

“Let’s focus,” Detective Lewis said. Cassidy knew she shouldn’t let herself get sidetracked, but it was difficult. “Not a single woman pushed you for more? Kept calling? Stands out as overly emotional? Perhaps threatened to tell Cassidy?”

August rubbed his forehead. “Maybe Savannah,” he finally said. “She was emotional when she was late, half of her planning the baby’s life, the other half terrified.
