Chapter 8
Despite his claims he was fully capable of returning to work, Luis was on medical leave until his doctors cleared him to work again. Chief Murray was open to putting Luis on administrative duty, but too much time filing paperwork and answering phones would make Luis feel worse. Luis needed to rest and heal. That was best accomplished under Beatrice’s watchful eye and, from Luis’s description, her amazing skills in the kitchen.
Without her partner available, Annabel was given temporary assignments, filling in for other officers who’d called in sick or helping at traffic accident scenes. She enjoyed the variety of the work. Every day was a new challenge. The search continued for Dylan Morris. The GGPD had tracked him to an apartment where he had been staying, but instead of Dylan, they had found a drug house, complete with ten pounds of heroin ready for sale and enough marijuana to get the entire town stoned. They had collected the evidence, and Chief Murray was pleased the drugs were off the street, but they still hadn’t located Dylan.
When Chief Murray asked her to head back to Willard’s Farm for another stakeout, Annabel had mixed emotions.
She thought about the kiss she had shared with Jesse, but she hadn’t told anyone about it. No one, that is, except Mia. Mia had cheered her on, telling her she had to take the bull by the horns. Annabel hadn’t been the aggressor in the relationship, and she kept throwing on the brakes. If she wanted anything to happen again, would she need to initiate it?
Annabel wasn’t worried about her safety at Jesse’s farm. Jesse was a good man, and he would look out for her. The stakeout was a waste of time. Jesse wasn’t hiding Regina. Other officers had been placed on stakeout duty at Willard’s Farm, and their reports were consistent with hers. Same employees arriving and leaving at regular times and no sign of Regina Willard. There had been no further criminal incidents at Willard’s Farm since the shooting.
The chief clapped her on the shoulder. “Annabel, I know it seems like a waste, but until we have a better lead on Regina, we’re watching Willard’s Farm. I have officers checking in with the Rosewood Rooming House, too. I doubt Regina will return there or to any place where we know she’s been, but we have to find her. We’re accountable to the public, and every dark-haired woman whose name or nickname starts with H is terrified.”
Annabel understood. She wouldn’t argue with the chief. “Okay, sir. I understand. I’ll head out to Jesse’s, that is, Willard’s Farm now.” She cleared her throat.
The chief lifted his brow, but didn’t comment on her slip of the tongue calling Jesse by his first name.
“Please, do. Report on my desk tomorrow, but call if you see anything of note,” Chief Murray said.
After making the drive to Willard’s Farm, Annabel chose a different location to watch. Though this stakeout wouldn’t contribute to the case, she wouldn’t make her actions predictable.
