As eager as the two of us had been to get the first rushed round out of the way to reach the good stuff, we were in no hurry to get to round two. Despite the chill outside (and everywhere else in the house), we were both content to lie in front of the fire, naked, limbs tangled up in each other, and just talk.

“Tell me about your mom.”

Kieran stroked his fingers through my chest hair. Guy had a fetish, if you asked me. Not that I was complaining. “What do you want to know?”

“You told me you two were close. I want to know what she’s like.”

“Selfless. Caring. Supportive.”

“Sounds like someone else I know. Apple doesn’t fall far, huh?”

“I’ll take that as a compliment. My mom, she’s… okay, here’s one. Like I said, when I told her I wanted to move to New York to model, she picked up and moved to Jersey. But her apartment in Newark was a lot smaller than our old one in Evansville, and cost twice as much. Still, she’d bring me groceries whenever I could barely make rent at whatever one-room shithole I’d be living in, and tell me how proud she was of me chasing my dream.

“So after The Seventh King, when I got my first big co-starring role—making almost a million—I called her up and said I was buying her a house. She said, ‘No you’re not.’” He laughed. “I tried arguing about how much she’d done for me, and how I wanted to pay her back. She told me, ‘You will, but not today. What you can do for me today is give me my first good night’s sleep in years knowing you’re finally safe.’”

I wrapped my arm tighter around him. “Sounds like you two are lucky to have each other.”

“We are. I don’t think I would've made it without her there with me.”

“What would you be doing if acting hadn’t panned out?”

Kieran huffed a laugh. “I'm still not sure it has, but—”

“No, uh-uh. You, my friend, are incredibly talented. I’d call that panning out.”

“Yeah, but…” Frowning, he rolled off me onto his back. “It’s like—I like you, right? But if I were to take you out on a date and get photographed holding your hand or kissing you on a street corner like a normal person, my chances of getting a lead role in a movie would be decimated. I hate it, and it’s not fucking fair, but that’s the way it is.”

“So you play their game, because you have to.”

“Exactly. So… I don’t know. There are times when I think it’s not worth it. Like now, with you.”

“Well, we can’t exactly go out in public right now anyway, because everything’s closed, so that’s a moot point.”

“True.” He laughed. “Most days I try not to think about it, because when I'm on set doing a scene and I’m in the zone? There’s nothing like it. Putting myself inside someone else’s head for a while, figuring out what makes them tick, what makes them do the things they do? I fucking love it.
