The life of Steve Wright continued in the same transient way in the following years. It was reported that for a time he was the landlord of a pub in Plumstead, south-east London. Between 1997 and 2000 he lived in Felixstowe at Stonelands House, Runnacles Way, and it was reported in the Mirror on 20 December that he had worked at the Brook Hotel bar in Felixstowe but that he had allegedly been fired for stealing money, as would later be divulged during court proceedings.

For much of the rest of the time, Wright took temporary contract work in warehouses and factories through employment agencies. He also spent a spell working in a bingo hall. It was while he was working at the bingo hall that Wright met Pamela Goodman.

Pamela, who was married and has a grown-up son called Jamie who works as a chef, became Wright’s long-term partner. She would eventually become his common-law wife, adopting his surname. In 2002 when Steve Wright moved to Ipswich they set up home together in a one-bedroom flat in Bell Close, south-central Ipswich. Both Steve and Pamela frequented the Uncle Tom’s Cabin pub on nearby Vernon Street, using it as their local, and Wright also used the bookmakers close by on occasion.

Their former neighbour in Bell Close, Steve McDonald, who lived upstairs from their flat, gave an interview the day after Wright’s arrest. McDonald said:

‘He’s a quiet bloke and friendly but they were always banging around in the flat and arguing. Other neighbours said they’d had to go and ask them to be quiet because the noise was so bad. I didn’t get the impression it was a violent relationship necessarily, but it was certainly fiery.’
