I wrote this letter to my father in 2004 when I stayed a few days in his home town Hastings. I meant it well, though I remember him being rather embarrassed at its content and not really knowing what to say about it. I was trying to connect with him, and my grandmother, but I think he rather didn’t want to talk about it. I read it now and it feels like a young boy trying to impress his father, which I suppose in a way it was. But visiting my grandmother’s grave was a very powerful experience. I also tracked down his boyhood house and rang him from outside it. As I gazed at the place from across the road, he poured seventy-year-old, pre-war memories into my ear. He loved to recall and reminisce about his youth and early manhood. It was perhaps, as it is for most of us, when he felt ultra alive.
