Fallon accepted a glass of wine from Riley. She took a deep breath and sat down on the sofa. “So…”
“So,” Riley said. Suddenly, she was nervous. Where had her confidence gone?
“Riley?”
“Sorry.”
“Talk to me,” Fallon said.
Riley let out a long breath. “I missed you, Fallon.”
“I missed you too.”
“I went back to California and I tried—Fallon, I tried to make the pieces come together. I saw my friends. I saw my mother and Mary. Nothing fit—nothing. I went to visit Robert.” Riley sucked in a deep breath.
Fallon reached for Riley’s hand. “Riley, you can tell me anything.”
“I needed to talk to him. I can’t explain it to you. Standing there, talking to him I realized what I need.”
Fallon waited.
“To make the pieces fit,” Riley explained. “I needed to come home. I need you. What I feel for you—it’s… Fallon, I…”
Fallon set her glass down and moved closer to Riley. She took Riley’s face in her hands. “You don’t need to explain.”
Riley’s tears began to fall.
“I love you, Riley.”
“I love you too. I’m in love with you. It scares me.”
“What does?”
“This. I don’t want to lose you,” Riley said.
“It scares me too. I wasn’t sure you would come back.”
“I’m not Olivia.”
“I know,” Fallon replied. I do know. “It still scares me, Riley. I can’t help that.”
“Where do we go from here?” Riley asked.
“One day at a time. We can take this slowly. We probably should. You and Owen are too important to me to screw this up.”
“Does that mean I can’t ask you to kiss me?”
Fallon chuckled. “You don’t need to ask.” She brought her lips to Riley’s. Gently, she coaxed Riley’s lips to part.
Silence—complete silence enveloped Riley. They’d shared kisses; not one had felt like this. Stillness and completion—that’s what Riley felt; home, she had come home. She held onto Fallon as the kiss deepened, yearning and tender, speaking the truth without the fumbling of words or sentiment. “Fallon,” she whispered when Fallon pulled away.
“Fawon!”
Fallon’s forehead fell against Riley’s. They both giggled.
“Yes?” Fallon asked.
“I’s hungwy.”
Fallon pulled back and exchanged a smile with Riley. “Macaroni and cheese or cereal, take your pick.”
Riley laughed. “Didn’t do any shopping, huh?”
“Nope.”
“We need to work on that,” Riley offered.
“Mommy, mac n cheese!”
“Guess, you have your answer,” Riley said.
“I could run down to the pub and bring something back,” Fallon said.
“No. You, me, Owen and a box of mac and cheese,” Riley said. She held out her hand.
“Mac n cheese!” Owen danced.
Riley leaned into Fallon as they made their way to the kitchen. “I’ll take mine with a kiss,” she said.
Fallon smiled. “That, I can handle.”
Riley pulled Fallon to a stop. “Fallon?”
“What?”
“I… I heard you—about taking this slowly.”
Fallon narrowed her gaze.
“But, tonight… Can we stay here? I need to be close to you.”
Fallon pulled Riley close and kissed her forehead tenderly. “Only if you let me hold you.”
Riley let out a long sigh. “I missed you so much.”
“Let’s make that macaroni and cheese. We have all night to talk; okay?”
“I don’t want to talk,” Riley muttered into Fallon’s shoulder.
