Kiki opened her eyes. She thought someone had called her name. She was alarmed to see the back of Cid.
âLeave this room. You donât belong here!â Cid threatened.
The shadow grew larger.
Cid backed up and started to pour a salt circle.
âWhat the hell are you doing in my room!â Kiki demanded.
âYou have an intruder. Jake alerted me,â Cid said. He motioned with his free hand for her to come to him. âIâm not sure if itâs friend or foe, but it opened your door and walked in while you were otherwise engaged.â
Kiki crawled out of bed and moved quickly to Cid. He picked her up and put her in the circle. âStay put, and donât break the salt line,â he ordered.
Cid slid his hand in the bag and pulled out an EVP booster. He turned it on and slid it across the table.
âIf youâre talking, I canât hear you. This will help me to understand you. You donât belong in here. You must leave.â
âCanât,â the digitized voice said.
âHow can I help you?â Cid asked calmly.
âRing, wedding ring, lost.â
âYouâre looking for a lost wedding ring?â
âYes.â
âMan or womanâs?â Kiki asked.
âMy ring. Wife cries. Thinks I was unfaithful. Washed hands. Ring gone.â
âWeâll find your ring if it is still here,â Cid promised.
The black shadow faded. The door opened and closed.
Cid turned on the light.
Kiki stood shaking in her Hello Kitty nightshirt. âCan I move?â
âYes, the ghost is gone.â
Kiki launched herself at Cid who gently guided her to a chair. He grabbed the coverlet from the bed and wrapped it around her. âThe room should warm up soon.â
He reached over, locked the door, and began turning on all the lights.
Kiki blinked trying to adjust to the lights. âHow did Jake know there was something in here?â
âDonât tell her Iâm a ghost. Not yet,â Jake pleaded in Cidâs ear.
âYour laptop was still on, and he checked out the room to make sure you hadnât left anything else on that would be a hazard while you slept.â
âYou mean he can see me?â Kiki asked, looking at the laptop on the bed. âThe webcam! I forgot about that.â
âThat and your phone. My associate is a bit overprotective,â Cid said, setting Kikiâs phone on its face.
âI donât know if I should be thankful or creeped out.â
âJake wouldnât hurt you. Itâs not his way.â
âThank you, Iâll try to explain me to her later,â Jake promised.
âWas that ghost going to hurt me?â
âIn my opinion, no. But leaving your door open wasnât cool. Anyone could have gotten in.â
âLike you,â Kiki said, her eyes hardening.
âBefore you go there, I was woke up by your boy⦠er⦠friend,â Cid said sternly.
âAlright, what do I do now?â
âWe either find the ring and get it to the entityâs wife, or you can expect nightly visits.â
âYou mean that thing has been in here before?â
âI would imagine it has. It could have been drawing power from somewhere and used it to manifest tonight. Ghosts need a lot of power to touch things in our world, Boss. I think that it planned on dismantling the cabin until it found the lost ring.
