It’s worth briefly pointing out here that The Countryman’s Diary is the most well-known edition of instructional handbooks given to Auxiliers. In fact, the first text book for sabotage was Calendar 1937, produced in July 1940. This instructed the first generation of Auxiliers about the contents of their original sabotage packs, the stores of explosives and detonators and other ancillaries. These lethal bits and pieces were contained in heavy-duty cardboard boxes, what veteran Bob Millard called the ‘Auxunit box’. Later on, the packs were issued in stronger steel boxes with a revised content.

Calendar 1938 was the second edition, published in 1942. It basically updated what went before but had one significant addition – instructions on how to use the new ‘unit charge’, which was to become the standard package used by Auxiliary Units.

The Countryman’s Diary is actually believed to be the last version and was not issued until 1943, when the threat of invasion had passed. Because it wasn’t produced, or used, in a state of emergency, it has survived to this day, when the previous handbooks have perished, and was long thought to be Auxunits’ only A-Z of mayhem. It is equally unlikely that such a top-secret document would be printed with the location of Auxiliary Units’ HQ emblazoned on the front cover!
