Chapter Twelve

“You caved, Hols, and I totally don’t blame you.” Melinda yanked damp towels from the washing machine, shook each one, and shoved them into the dryer as Holly leaned against the laundry room doorjamb. “That man’s a hottie for sure. If I weren’t old enough to be his mother… hell, if I hadn’t been friends with his mother and stepmother, I’d have taken a crack at him myself.”

“I didn’t cave, Mom.” She stepped into the compact space, grabbed a basket full of Matty’s freshly laundered jeans and shirts, and carried it to the living room. “The decision to be okay with Matty having the lead in the Christmas play has nothing whatsoever to do with Aidan Flaherty. It’s about Matty having a little fun. That’s all.” She dumped the clothes on the sofa. “And by the way, ewww! You are way too old for him!”

Melinda, hot on her heels, gave a little hip shake and a wink before plopping down on the couch. “I’ve still got it, baby. The boy might need a little older woman experience.”

“Mom, seriously, stop or I’m going to need brain bleach. Torn pants reminded her of Aidan and the sexy low-slung jeans he wore the other night when she was at his apartment above Mac’s garage. Soft washed, faded almost white with a hint of tanned thigh showing through a hole in the pant leg.

“Is that your worry?” Melinda reached for a long-sleeved Star Wars T-shirt and folded it neatly. “You’re sure we’re talking about Matty’s fascination?”

Holly raked her hair off her face, then flipped her hand tiredly. “Okay. Mine, too. He’s making it really hard to resist him. Sometimes I feel like that dumb kid who had the terrible crush so many years ago. I just want to hurl myself at him. Hell, I practically did the other night.”

“What stopped you?”

Holly groaned. “I’d like to tell you it was common sense, but truth is, he did.” She held a still-warm folded sweatshirt against her chest and shivered, still feeling the effect of Aidan’s kisses and touches. “I think he wants a relationship, Mom.”

“And you just want sex?” Melinda’s frank question didn’t surprise her at all.

She and her mother had grown into a very open rapport since Holly had returned to River’s Edge. Conversations after Clive’s death had frequently gone on late into the night, both of them talking with brutal honesty about their marriages, Holly’s childhood, and how Melinda felt she’d failed as a mother. Time had been
