Chapter 8
Javi
Catching Bellaâs expression when she spotted the present made me eager to get the decorating underway. When Iâd bought the gift, I hadnât planned to be trimming the tree with her. But her plans for the day made it even more perfect.
After carrying in the tree, I ran back out to the truck and grabbed the present.
She eyed me as I walked back inside.
âWhy donât you order the pizza while I get the tree situated in the stand. It may take me a few grumbles to get it straight.â
Laughing, she picked up her phone.
I set to work. Stretched out on the floor, I adjusted the base. Then I stood to assess the straightness. The tree leaned to the left. Back down on the floor, I adjusted the base again. I let loose a few choice words, albeit quietly, because the tree now leaned to the right and forward.
I was getting more exercise getting up and down off the floor than Iâd gotten all week . . . which said a lot about my exercise routine this week. Normally good about carving out time for that sort of thing, Iâd been a complete lump during the Thanksgiving week.
Working on the base again, I inhaled before getting back up.
âWait. A little more to the right. And back just a hair.â Bella stood next to my legs. âPizza will be here in a half hour.â
I followed her instructions, adjusting until she said it was perfect. When I stood up, I sighed. âFinally. Should we put the lights in first or . . .â
âOr what?â Her face brightened.
Tugging her close, I whispered, âOr would you like to open the gift I brought?â
âThatâs what I want to do first. The curiosity is killing me.â
I tweaked her nose. âI definitely donât want that.â
She brushed at the couch cushion before sitting down and tearing the paper off the gift. As soon as sheâd lifted the lid off the box, she gasped. âAn angel!â
âFor the top of your tree. There are lights inside that shine through the punched tin. And sheâs holding a heart so youâll be reminded that I love you.â I dropped down next to her. âBecause I do.â
Tears slipped down her cheeks as she hugged it to her chest. âItâs brand new, and itâs already special. I love it.â She cupped my cheek with one hand. âAnd I love you more than Martha loves Christmas.â
Telling her how I felt had moved us one step closer to a discussion about marriage. But I wanted that conversation kicked off by a question. I had no doubts that I wanted to marry her. My doubts were all about where to live. Living in two different cities made it a tad more complicated.
âYou look so pensive.â She grazed her thumb along my cheek. âWhatâs wrong?â
âNothingâs wrong. I just wish we lived in the same city.â
She blinked, then pressed a soft kiss to my lips. âWeâll figure it out. Seriously.â
Threading my fingers into her hair, I silently promised her forever.
