Chapter 16

Doris still wasn’t home when Birdie returned, which wasn’t unusual – she probably wouldn’t be home until just after dinner – so Birdie plated the beautiful cupcakes on one of her mama’s Christmas platters, setting the clear glass top over them, to show off the beautiful creations, and sat down with her supplies at the kitchen table.

She’d let Tabby out of her room to wander the house, since Mama wasn’t home anyway, and the cat perched on a chair next to Birdie while she crafted her flyers. She used a calligraphy pen with sparkly gold ink on the green sheets, and a silver one on the red sheets.

Holiday stress got you down?

Call Santa’s Helper!

That’s right, direct from the North Pole, Tabby the Elf is here to take care of your wish list.

Need to decorate? Santa’s Helper!

Need gift wrapping? Santa’s Helper!

Need a server for your holiday party? Santa’s Helper!

Whatever you need to make your holidays bright – Santa’s Helper is your answer!

Call now!

Birdie cut little fringe tabs at the bottom of each sheet, and put the number to her new cell phone on them, so that people could just come up, read the sheet, and tear off a tab.

“This is so exciting, Tabs!” She scratched the cat’s ears absently.

Tabby yawned and settled her head down on her paws. Birdie lettered and snipped until her hands ached, then rubbed the back of her neck and rolled her head from side to side, listening to the little crackles in her shoulders.

“Time to get started on dinner, Tabby.” She gathered up all of her papers into a large Christmas-themed gift bag. “I’ll drop these off at businesses around town first thing tomorrow morning, but right now, I need to get working on dinner, so Mama can eat when she comes home. And you, my furry friend, have to go back in the bedroom, so she doesn’t catch us breaking the rules.” Birdie scooped up the sleepy tabby up under one arm, carrying her bag of flyers with the other.

Her creative juices flowing, Birdie decided to make a special dinner for her mother. She hoped that it might pave the way for a civil conversation where she could apologize. She’d been thinking all day about their last conversation and cringed when she replayed her rude behavior in her mind.

Doris Gentry lived very much in the present, taking one day at a time, and not wasting any energy by looking backward or forward. Surely she must’ve had dreams at one time, dreams other than being a wife and mother, and Birdie wondered what could’ve possibly gone so wrong that her mama had given up on really living, and had settled for merely existing. The thought made her sad. The way she had treated her made her feel even worse, and she spent the entire time that she cooked, rehearsing what she’d say while they ate a delicious dinner.

Birdie went all out. She glazed a ham and put it in the oven, peeled and boiled potatoes
