UNFORTUNATELY, THE JUDGE didnât like Monday Night Football as much as Noel and her associates had hoped. Her court session ran very late. The last witness for the prosecution had a fainting spell, then tried to pass it off as a heart attack. It was after eight by the time she returned to her office.
With the exception of Martin Faber, the entire floor was empty. Noel tried for the fifth time to reach Jack, but she got no answer and finally gave up.
âNoel!â
Two feet inside her office door, she swung around. âMatthew.â She forced a smile. âWhat are you doing here?â
âI need to talk to you.â
She let him come in, motioned to a leather armchair. âAbout Jack?â
He gave a short laugh. âHow did you know?â
âYou donât like him, and I was with him at the Christmas party.â She shed her jacket. âWhatâs that in your hand?â
He shook the box. âChocolates. They were on your secretaryâs desk. Your nameâs on the label.â
âYou can open them if you want to.â
âYou know me and my sweet tooth all too well, Iâm afraid.â
She also recognized the charm he was turning on for her benefit. âJack and I are business associates, Matthew, and thatâs exactly all you need to know.â
âHe wants you, Noel.â
She faced him from behind her desk. âIâm not going to do this with you, okay? We had a relationship. It ended. Iâm sorry, but weâre done.â
With deliberate, almost velvety movements, he undid the ribbon and paper. âTheyâre Belgian, your favorite. You donât seem overly sorry.â
âI was at the time. Right now, Iâm tiredâof work and games.â
âJack has his grandfather in him. You shouldnât discount that, darling.â
She hated when he called her darling. âJackâs his own person, Matthew. If you bothered to know him, youâd realize that.â
âIf I bothered to know him? Heâs a Ransom. You canât get anywhere near him.â
âHave you tried?â
âWhat, go into his office and say, âHey Jack, letâs do lunchâ?â
âMaybe heâd surprise you, and say yes.â
Matthew selected two chocolates and sampled the first. âMocha creme. Excellent flavor. Noel, I didnât come here to argue with you.â The charm returned full force. âI was hoping we could have dinner.â
âSorry. I have other plans.â
His mustache twitched sideways, a sure sign he was displeased. âWith Jack Ransom?â
âThatâs my business. Have another chocolate, Matthew, then let yourself out.â
His very handsome face didnât look quite so handsome when the color rose in it. But he smiled and acknowledged her with a nod. âObviously, I canât force you. But Iâd watch myself where Jack Ransomâs concerned. You know the saying.â
âThe apple doesnât fall far from the tree?â
He held up forbearing hands. âItâs your funeral, sweetheart.â
âMmm. Matthew?â She watched him pocket two more chocolates. âWhat brand of cologne do you use?â
âItâs a blend of three.â
It figured. âWhich three?â
His eyes gleamed. âThatâs for me to know and you to sniff out. Ciao, Noel.â
âHeyââ Jack came through the door just as Matthew was preparing to leave. He looked the man up and down, then glanced at Noel. âAm
