Chapter Seven

“DID I ORDER THE WRONG flowers?”

Jenni looked up from her paperwork at the nurses’ station.

Trey sighed. He thought he’d made a great connection with Tori. And certain, the sparks felt were mutual.

“What happened?” Jenni asked.

“I don’t know.” Trey handed the flowers to Jenni.

“Brighten up your desk.” He attempted a smile with the gesture. “I waited outside the bank.” Trey pointed to the flowers. “Flowers in hand. And”—he sighed— “she just blew me off. Said it was too late for supper and too early for breakfast.”

“Maybe she had a long day.” Jenni put the flowers in a vase and turned. “I mean she did just take over the bank today, for Frank. I’m sure she’s just tired.”

“True.” Trey commented. He patted the station counter with his hand. “I’ll be in my office.” He turned to walk away and paused. “Probably order a pizza.” He dug in his pocket for some cash and handed it to her. “I’ll give you a piece, if you let me know when it arrives.”

“An offer I simply won’t refuse.” Jenni promised to call when it arrived.

Trey waved as he made his way down the corridor.

Trey looked in the mirror. He wasn’t in the party mood until he dressed in the Santa suit.

“Ho! Ho! Ho!” His hands jiggled his pillowed-belly, and then he laughed. “How did I get myself into this?”

“Because you’re the best doctor and you make a difference in so many lives.”

Trey saw Joel and Rachel at the doorway of the doctor’s lounge. “Do you think the kids will know?” He turned around and extended his arms to display his Santa suit to his best friends.

“Heck! I didn’t recognize you until you spoke.” Joel made his way slowly to where Trey stood. “So, disguise your voice.”

“Or just do the deep Ho, Ho, Ho,” Rachel added.

“Thanks guys. Getting pretty good on those.” Trey pointed to the crutches.

Joel nodded. “I have this fantastic doctor, so if you ever need one...”

Trey laughed with Joel. “Well at least you have a sense of humour.”

“Thanks for taking care of my dad. And me. And the pub. I would have had to close it.” Joel turned to Rachel. “And if you hadn’t called her”—he paused and smiled— “let’s just say, I’m happy to have the love of my life with me for the holidays. And hopefully, convince her this time to stay in White Cove.”

Rachel tapped his arm. “We know your stubbornness kept you from picking up the phone.”

Joel extended his hand to Trey. “Thanks man. You always have my back.”

Trey laughed. That’s what old college roommates do. I was your wing man when you two met. I wasn’t about to see it fall apart. You two were meant for each other.”

“So, does that mean I get out of here soon?” Joel questioned.

“Possibly tomorrow,” Trey announced, and then added. “But no guarantees.”

“Okay. Okay. We’ll let you get back to work, Santa. Have fun!”

Trey turned back to the mirror and practiced. He noticed Tori at the doorway. His heart skipped a beat.
