James Whistler's mother. Mortimer Menpes made this etching about ten years after Whistler painted his original masterpiece. The old lady was in her late seventies when the Australian artist made this print soon after he first met Whistler.

A young scholar. It was the ambition of every student to pass the civil service examination. A successful scholar, no matter how humble, was allowed to wear a gold button on the top of his hat. These examinations were the road to a successful career.
