TWELVE
As Kit went about his business for the morning, a single line from one of his favorite songs kept passing through his head. âLife is what happens to you when youâre busy making other plans.â Never had that simple statement felt so true.
âIâm nervous about the way some of the girls have been behaving,â Randall told him about half an hour after Walt left to change clothes. They stood at the corner of the west pasture, watching the segment of the flock with the most new mothers who had nursing lambs. âTheyâre jumpier than they should be, and more of the ewes are refusing to let their lambs nurse than Iâm comfortable with.â
Kit hummed and stroked his beard. âScrapie?â he asked with a frown. That deadly disease was the last thing his sheep needed.
Randall sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. âCould be,â he said, wincing hard. âBut it could just be all the upset of the season. They might just be feeling the stress of staff turnover around here.â
Kit nodded. Sheep werenât just dumb animals. They picked up on things. They also picked up deadly bacterial infections and disorders. Scrapie could decimate the flock, but at least it had behavioral signs early on.
âWe can separate the girls that seem a bit off from the others just in case,â he said, making his decision. âLetâs give the ones who are refusing to nurse a chance. It could be some other problem that weâre not seeing.â
Randall nodded and went to direct the farm hands who had shown up to work in their tasks for the day. At least everyone except Cyrus was still there, most of them, even Danny, swearing their loyalty. Something was definitely afoot, though, which Kit hated.
He went to work himself, walking among the sheep and taking a good look at each one to see if they had further signs of anything they shouldnât. But inspecting sheep was second-nature to him to the point where his mind wandered.
It wandered straight back to Walt and the amazing night the two of them had spent together. Heâd been worried Walt would let his cares get the better of him for a moment or two after the restaurant, but fortunately, those worries had been unfounded. Walt ended up throwing himself into their night together.
Heâd been so open and sensual, going with whatever Kit wanted from him. Heâd wanted way more than heâd thrown at Walt, which was a good thing. It left them in a place where Walt would come back for more, and Kit absolutely wanted to give it to him.
Kit still had questions, though. A lot of them. Waltâs harmless question about âBDSM kink stuffâ was a small red flag about where his mind was in terms of diving into the kink world. As open as Walt had been, there was still hesitation there.
Hesitation was fine. Kit would rather his partner think about what they were doing and fully commit to it than rush headlong at something that might not be right for him and regret it later.
