Matty and I talked for a long time. He told me so many horror stories of the things his parents had done—so much abuse and neglect, and the saddest part of all was that they were too out of it to know or care about the damage they had caused. So we talked, and we drank tea—we even laughed now and then, between Matty’s tears. It was hard to reconcile that for almost a year I had shared a house with this sensitive, intelligent, so terribly hurt young man, and never made a real effort to talk to him, or listen to him. I’d had my own issues to deal with, so maybe I was being a little hard on myself, but I was almost healed. Matty was only just beginning that journey.

I wouldn’t like to guess at how long we sat there, but Noah came home, made a sandwich and went to bed. Adam was also done wrapping presents and stopped behind me, looping his arms around my shoulders as he nuzzled into my neck. I drew breath, set to make my usual protest about him getting too touchy-feely, but didn’t. Instead, I turned and kissed his cheek, laughing at his expression of surprise.
