JAY

I was halfway home, my truck rumbling along the road, when I looked over at the empty seat, which should not have been empty.

I slapped a palm to my forehead. “Shit.” I could not have picked a worse time to forget my equipment bag at Saithong’s. After dinner tonight, I was worn out. Chai seemed to be warming up to me one minute, and the next he pushed me away. Teasing him had been fun for a while, but I should have known I wouldn’t be able to keep my feelings out of it. Getting to know his family, feeling like I was a part of it, even to the point that Tris proclaimed us on a double date, it was all too much knowing the way Chai was playing with my heart.

I growled like the wolf I was and cranked on the steering wheel. The tires squealed as I made a U-turn. I didn’t know if anyone would still be at the store when I got there, but unfortunately I had to try.

I muttered, “Please let somebody be there, and please don’t let it be him.”

I was surprised when I pulled back into the empty, silent parking lot and saw a light glow through the front windows. I walked slowly to the automatic door of the grocery. I stopped dead when I saw who was waiting for me.

Chai.

He opened the door and waved me in. Tentatively, I stepped through. Being around him was already difficult, but being alone with him, remembering our first night together, was impossible. Especially with the delectable scent pouring off him at that very moment. It was spicy, and oh so sweet.

“Forget something?” He asked. His eyes held something. A catty seduction, warm and powerful. An arousal, something from deep down inside, something from the most carnal parts of his body.

I shut my eyes for a moment, unable to look at him without the blood flowing down south. “My bag. I’ll just grab it and go.”

He pushed himself forward, into my space. “You don’t have to rush, Jay.”

“Yes, I do.” His scent was doing things to me, unimaginable things, and I needed to get out of there before I did something I would regret. It was obvious; he was going into heat. For me. “Can you show me where it is?” He turned and began to walk away, but he looked over his shoulder, beckoning me with a finger. My dick twitched, and I had to grab it through my pants to keep Lil’ Jay from getting too excited. I followed him over to the canned goods aisle. My equipment bag sat there, innocuous, innocently waiting.

“There’s my baby. I’m surprised nothing happened to her.”

“Folks are honest around here. Good, you know?”

“Yeah, I know.” It hurt to think about how good they were, and how well I fit in, and how much I wanted to stay. There was no way I could, though. “Thanks, Chai. I gotta go now.” I picked up a foot.

“Wait.” The desperation in Chai’s voice made me put it right back down.
