The quiet and peaceful postrace green room is a nice change from the intense concentration I've been under for the last two hours. Here I can release the tension in my stressed-out body. The yellow, red, and black-colored walls have German flags and pictures of past German Grand Prix winners.

Today that includes me. Another victory for Wolert Porsche. Another victory for Mr. Wolert as he still lies in bed. Still unconscious. Still needing the machines to keep him alive. Today is a bittersweet win because I would give up a season of wins if it meant that wonderful old man could still be here with us.

Akira pats me on the back as we both guzzle down bottles of water to replenish from all the sweat soaking our racing suits.

I give him a quick hug. “I kept having to ask how far back you were because you kept closing in. You made me earn it today.”

“You were so quick during that second stint,” Akira says. “Couldn't make up the time. Amazing drive today.”

“You too.” I dab the sweat off my neck and face. The cool, clean towel feels so good.

“Will Ralf make it? Jonathan and I heard that things weren’t going so well.”

Reality lands on my chest again. It's so cold and so final.

“I don't know. Manny has hope, but the doctors don’t.”

“Such bad things shouldn't happen to such great men,” Akira says.

I don't answer, but I totally agree.
