Chapter 7
I CALLED my agent first thing in the morning. Before I had a hit or caffeine. I wanted to get it over with. I told him what was going on and that Iâd need more time. I counted the seconds before he spoke. Ten.
âI canât do that, Drew.â
My empty stomach suddenly felt queasy. Christian had always been a no-nonsense kind of guy, but heâd worked with me in times of need. And shit, if there ever was a time of need, this was it.
âYou either give me the manuscript at the end of the month or I drop you.â
I let that sink in, and the tics started. âButââ
âNo buts. End of story.â
That would have been funny in any other situation, except this one.
I exhaled. âIs this your version of tough love?â
âSomething like that.â
I realized maybe Iâd caught him before his caffeine as well. âFine.â I donât do well with confrontation. And arguing was not my thing.
He must not have liked my tone. âWe could draw up the termination of relationship documents now if youâd like.â
My shoulder jerked and I almost let the phone drop. âIâll see what I can do.â
âPlease do. I donât want to let you go.â
I was beginning to get angry, so I knew Iâd better end the call or Iâd say something Iâd regret. âEnjoy your day.â I said it with as little inflection as possible and hung up before he could reply. I wish I had known a cool Cajun French insult. Iâd have to ask Finn.
There was no way in hell Iâd finish this book by the end of the month. I wasnât a fast writer, and this had turned out to be the writing retreat of nightmares. If only I wrote horror. Maybe Iâd get off on this kind of thing. But all I wanted to do was hide. Sure, Iâd gotten in the heads of some pretty interesting villains, if I did say so myself. But that was fiction. I made that crap up! This was real life drama. Murder, for Christâs sake! And it sucked. Royally sucked.
And now I had essentially lost my agent and my tics were raging.
When I finally ventured from my room, after more hits than usual to quell the urges, I was starving. Finn was nowhere to be found, but he left a note on the refrigerator that demanded I eat the food in it. I was in love.
