Brenda shuffled from foot to foot on the path outside Deke’s small house. She knew from talking to Jodie that it used to be a garage, but they’d had it converted to a tiny house. If Brenda had been in charge of the conversion, the end result would have looked like something out of a fairy tale, with climbing roses and singing birds. Deke had gone for a more modern, and realistic, approach. One entire wall of his house was made up of smoky glass, and a steel frame cube had been added to the back as a conservatory. The result was a glorious mix of Victorian carriage house and industrial workspace. Somehow, it fit perfectly together.

But the design of the place wasn’t what was held her attention. No, her attention was firmly focused on the blazing lights inside the house and Deke’s shadowy form as he wandered around the place. Unlike the other night, Deke had shut the blinds and there was no perving over his body for Brenda. Probably a good thing. Brenda’s heart was racing enough without adding to its stress.

She glanced at the time on her phone. It was ten o’clock. Too late to visit, but it had taken her this long to work up the courage. Brenda adjusted the wicker basket as her hands began to get clammy. She was here. She might as well knock on the door. What was the worst that could happen? Scratch that. The worst was her going down in a fiery ball of humiliation and shame. It wasn’t a good idea to think about the worst. No, it was better to spend her time thinking about that wonderful kiss they’d shared. Surely he would want more of that. She knew she did.

With a deep breath, Brenda forced her legs to walk the last few steps to the door. Her hand knocked before she gave herself a chance to change her mind. It then took all of her self-control to stop from running like the coward she was before he opened the door. She was on the verge of diving for the bushes when the lock clicked and the door swung open, revealing a decidedly surprised Deke.

“Brenda.” He took a step towards her, still with one hand high on the door. His eyes scanned the area behind her. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” she said hurriedly. She held out the basket, aware that her hands weren’t anywhere near steady. “I brought a thank you gift, for not turning me into the police last night.”

Oh how she hoped her smile covered the fact her knees were knocking and she’d broken out in an icy-cold sweat.

His eyes flicked to the basket before returning to her face. “You brought me a thank you gift? At ten o’clock?”

“Is it past your bedtime? I hear the older you get, the earlier you go to sleep.”

“No, it isn’t past my bedtime, but it’s a bit late to be dropping off a thank you gift.”

“Surprise?” She gave him what she hoped was a sunny, and in no way insane, smile.
