Chapter 13
Levi
âI don't remember at all. I was too drunk,â Maren whined. âIâve done been bit, chewed up and spit out. I'm too old for this. I feel horrible. I don't want a hangover.â
I sat up, but my movements were slower than molasses. Like the undead, we got dressed. We eventually went to Royal Road and found some coffee. Taking it outside to the crisp air, we sipped it by the rows of motorcycles parked out front.
âDo you know what I usually do when I'm hungover? Go for a ride.â
âAbout that,â Maren started. âWhen you caught Fireball, what did you do with the motorcycle? Because that was my Harley.â
âYou're shitting me?â
âNo, it's mine, and I would really like to have it back.â
I wouldnât tell her he escaped me. âYou think I'm gonna give you a motorcycle? A way to leave? When you're a fucking spy for my enemies?â
Maren gave me a mean glare. âI want my hog back.â
We were both in a terrible mood.
âIâm going for a ride. You know I can't go riding without you. So. You can ride on the back of mine.â
Begrudgingly, she agreed.
The ride in the cool morning air woke us both up more than the coffee had. And actually, the silent ride was even nicer with a womanâs embrace at my back. When we stepped back into Royal Road, Pagan called us into Kingpinâs office.
âWhat's going on with you two? What the hell have you done, Levi?â
Holy shit, did he know about us? Did he know I was keeping the fact that Maren was a spy from my brothers all so I could enact my revenge?
Maren looked terrified. I put my arm around her and felt her tremble against me.
My brothers were going to kill her. I truthfully didn't know what I was going to do. Half of me wanted to knock Pagan out, take her and run. Flee on my hog. I didn't want what happened to my sister to ever be done to her.
When I didn't answer him, Pagan turned around. He turned on the television.
Fuck. Iâd forgotten all about the cameras around here. Did they pick up our conversations about Maren being a spy? There were also cameras in the basement. Shit. How could I be so stupid?
âWe've got night vision. Levi don't be so stupid,â Pagan said, like he could read my mind.
âWhat are you talking about?â I asked, like I truly didnât know, but I was just buying some time. The video started, so I tried to make it out. What was happening on the screen?
Maren kept quiet as a mouse but looked curious as well.
I squeezed her arm to try and reassure her that I had her back.
Pagan said, âI know it's you, too. Someone saw you two running out of there buck-naked last night.â
Last night?
I stared at the screen. The black and white and green figures looked like they were flying. It made no damn sense.
âWhat am I looking at here, Pagan?â
âLet me turn this up,â he said.
âMarco,â my voice sounded.
