With her arms around Gabby, Jennifer pulled her in tight for a long hug goodbye. “Thank you for coming,” she whispered in her friend’s ear, feeling a surge of emotion. Although the woman had arrived unexpectedly and had bad timing, she was still Jennifer’s closest friend, and she loved her. “Having you here meant a lot to me.”

Gabby pulled away, her eyes scanning Jennifer’s face. A mix of concern and relief reflected in her gaze. “I’m glad I came,” she said, her voice laced with sincerity. “You look different, in a good way. It seems like you’ve come out of your shell a little. Stronger. Braver. You were great out shopping.”

Jennifer couldn’t help but let a small smile play on her lips, appreciating her friend’s words. “I do feel good,” she admitted, her voice tinged with a hint of vulnerability. “For a while, I could forget about everything and just be free...”

“But?” Gabby asked with a raised eyebrow at Jennifer’s pause.

After a beat, Jennifer exhaled sharply, her eyes fixed on the blue sky above them. “But it’s time for me to face reality,” she confessed, feeling a mixture of determination and uncertainty. “I need to take a long, hard look at my life and figure out what comes next.”

Gabby nodded understandingly, her eyes filled with empathy. “I’m glad you’re taking at least one more day,” she said. “You know, it feels like Riley will let you stay as long as you want.” Jennifer’s friend shook her head. “Which is still very strange to me. Not that you’re not fun company, but well…” She hesitated. “Riley just doesn’t seem like herself around you.”

Jennifer’s brow furrowed, confusion etching across her face. “What do you mean?” she asked, a touch of apprehension running through her.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Yes,” Jennifer answered slowly. “What do you want to know?”

Gabby bit her lip before staring into Jennifer’s eyes. “Is there something going on between you and Riley?”

Jennifer held her breath while she pondered how best to answer the question. She didn’t want to be dishonest to her friend, but she hadn’t talked to Riley about how to handle such a question. “I’m honestly not sure what is going on between us,” she finally answered. “But we can talk about it when I’m back.”

Gabby’s eyes softened, curiosity still glimmering within them. She nodded slowly, a look of understanding washing over her face. “All right,” she said gently, opening the car door and sliding into the driver’s seat. “But just remember to guard your heart, Jen. Don’t let yourself get hurt.”

Jennifer couldn’t help but feel her chest tighten at Gabby’s words, her emotions already swirling in a whirlwind of uncertainty. “I’ll try,” she promised with a faint smile, watching as Gabby started the car and drove down the driveway. As her friend disappeared into the distance, Jennifer turned to face the breathtaking view of the ocean. The weather was perfect for a second day in a row, and as she looked over the water, she let herself feel both excited and anxious.
