Blacksmiths were an essential part of any quarry works. This is a blacksmith employed by the Cape Ann Tool Company. It was noted that at least one blacksmith was required for every 10 or 15 quarrymen just to keep their tools in top condition. Blacksmiths repaired, sharpened, and tempered granite tools as well as designed and fabricated simple tools. They also made shoes for the horses and oxen. (SBHS.)

Men worked the furnaces at the Cape Ann Tool Company as late as 1970. Tongs, asbestos gloves, and special glasses were required at the forge. The only safety equipment used by quarrymen before 1890 was safety glasses. Most men seldom used gloves. (SBHS.)
