CHAPTER 8
Cap had completed his morning rounds of the eastern end of town without incident and headed west into Bismarck. He had asked Coop about moving into the house when he returned tomorrow, and the sheriff had agreed but had also laughed because he understood his deputyâs sudden need to change his residence.
As he entered the business end of Main Avenue, he pulled Joe up to a small shop and dismounted. When heâd first spotted it, heâd been amazed that it could survive with its limited offering.
But when he entered J.M Katz Confectionary, the powerful and tempting smell gave him his answer. Mister Katz offered much more than just a wide assortment of hard candies. He also had German pastries that made his mouth water by just looking at them. But what had added the most noticeable sweetness to the air was unique scent of chocolate.
He stepped to the counter and Mister Katz smiled as he asked, âWhat would you like, Cap?â
Cap smiled when the proprietor addressed him using his nickname. Some of the German settlers were obviously his customers.
âI need three large sticks of peppermint and two paper sacks.â
âYes, sir,â he replied as he set the two small paper bags on the counter before turning and taking three eight-inch-long peppermint sticks and placing them on the bags.
âWill that be all?â
He was about to say, âYes,â when he stared at the rows of treats behind the glass and said, âAdd three of the wrapped chocolate bars as well.â
Johann smiled then slid the back door to the case open and took out the three bars and set them near the giant peppermint sticks.
âThat will be six cents for the peppermint sticks and seventy-five for the chocolate bars.â
Cap handed him a dollar bill then asked, âDo you have a pencil?â
Mister Katz pulled a stubby pencil from his pocket and handed it to him before placing the dollar note in his till and taking out Capâs change.
Using the short pencil, Cap started to draw an angel on one of the bags to let Gustave and Elsa know that he was still watching them.
Johann watched and wondered what the deputy was trying to draw but couldnât quite figure it out.
Cap finished his poor artwork and flipped it around to get the confectionerâs opinion.
âWhat do you think?â
âIs it a crow or perhaps a vulture?â Johann asked.
Cap agreed that it was probably closer to those unappreciated birds than a heavenly apparition, so he then drew a halo around the angelâs head before he showed it to Mister Katz again.
He stared at the modified image and asked, âIs that raincloud about to descend on the birdâs head?â
Cap laughed as he replied, âNo, sir. Itâs supposed to be an angel, but Iâm not a very good artist.â
Johann smiled as he said, âLet me try.â
Cap handed him his pencil then watched as he began to create an angel on the second paper sack in smooth, gentle strokes. When he finished, he turned the bag to face Cap and looked at him.
