Chapter 19

“He’s going to need someone to watch him overnight.” Zander rubbed Jasper, the German Shepherd, between the ears. The large dog had to be sedated for him to stitch up his eyelid.

“All our techs are off this weekend. They all had plans with their families. And the owner, Earle Reed won’t remember to put his drops in. He loves his dog, but he’s very forgetful. His daughter will be here Monday so she’ll be able to help with Jasper. Until then, I’m afraid it’s up to us.” Shirley looked at him over her glasses. “I’m driving up to Memphis to spend the weekend with my daughter. I can see if she would be okay with me bringing him too. She is fine with me bringing George. I’m sure she won’t mind another dog.”

Zander shook his head. “No, I can’t ask you to do that.”

“I can cancel my trip and look after them both. I can go another weekend.”

Zander frowned. “Absolutely not. It’s rare that you get to see your family. I’ll take them both with me.”

Shirley frowned. “But what about your trip? You always do an end of the year trip with Darren and Thomas. You were supposed to hike the Smoky Mountains weren’t you?”

“Yes. We were supposed to leave tonight and have a long weekend. That way we could have Saturday and Sunday to hike and then come back Monday.” He sighed and ran his hands through his hair. “I’ll see if I can get a refund on my flight.”

Shirley looked at Jasper. “So you are taking him home with you? How do you think George will feel about that?”

“He does okay with other dogs. As long as he knows he’s top dog.” He grinned. “I’ll keep Jasper in the laundry room until I know they can get along.” He turned to pull out some drops.

“Want me to put that in a bag?”

“Yes. I need to make sure he gets these three times a day for a week.”

“You want a cone? In case he tries to scratch his eye?”

“Put one in the bag with the eye drops. Will you stay with him while I talk with Earle?”

“Sure will.” She moved to the table where the large dog lay sprawled out. She rested her hand on his side and murmured comforting words to the dog.

Zander went out into the near empty waiting room. He smiled when he spotted the old man worrying his cap in his hands. Earle stood when he saw Zander.

“Is he going to be okay, Doc?”

“Jasper is going to be just fine. He has three stitches in his eyelid and he will require drops three times a day for ten days to make sure it doesn’t get infected. I’m going to take him home with me over the weekend just to keep an eye on him, if that’s okay. When your daughter gets here Monday, I’ll bring him back to your house.”

Relief spread across the old man’s weathered face. “Thanks, Doc. Thanks for everything you did for Jasper.
