Chapter Fourteen
Taryn clung to Daltonâs shoulders as he lowered his head and claimed her mouth in a deep, plundering kiss. She felt as though she melted against him and needed to hang on as her knees buckled.
His arms tightened around her, and she clung tighter as she opened up to his kiss. It was a strange feeling â she felt vulnerable, and exposed, but at the same time, she felt safe. Not just safe, but safer than she could ever remember feeling.
Sheâd been on her own for a long time. Since Nico died, sheâd believed that she was the only person in the world she could depend on. Sure, she knew that Evie was always there for her, but in the early years of their friendship, Evie had Tom. Then, after Tom died, Taryn felt she was the one who needed to be there for her friend. She was the one doing the supporting.
Now, standing here with Daltonâs massive arms around her, she felt as though she could finally relax. And she did.
Dalton lifted his head and cocked an eyebrow when he sensed the change in her. It made her tense up. What was she thinking? She couldnât go letting down her guard.
He raised his hand and brushed it over her hair. His eyes were intense as they looked into hers. âI hope you do stick around, and I hope you can learn to do that.â
âDo what?â
âWhat you just did â trust me enough to relax with me.â
She swallowed as she looked back into his eyes. âHow ⦠How did you even know?â On the one hand, it was amazing that he was able to read her so well. On the other, it was kind of scary.
âI think itâs because weâre more alike than either of us realized. You werenât the only one who started to relax, started to trust this ⦠Then, when you tensed up, I did, too.â
He shrugged and pressed a kiss to her lips. âMaybe we can help each other figure it out.â
She nodded slowly. âMaybe.â Her heart was racing. She wanted to think about what that might look like, but at the same time, it was kind of scary. So, she went for the easy out.
âBut first, I thought you were supposed to be trying to convince me that youâd be worth staying for.â
He smiled through pursed lips, and then started to unbutton his shirt. âYouâre right. I am.â He chuckled. âExcept, you were the one who talked about trying. I donât do try. Iâm just going to get straight to the convincing.â
Taryn could only watch as he finished unbuttoning his shirt then shrugged out of it. She didnât think sheâd ever seen so much muscle in her life â not on all the men sheâd known put together.
He smirked at her, there was no other word for it; that was a smirk if ever sheâd seen one as he came back to her and put his hands on her waist.
âYou surprise me; I thought youâd be more competitive.
