Chapter Twelve:
Can't Talk About It
â Johnny stood on the ledge above Hurricane Bay watching the crowd of swimmers as they braced themselves for the last wave of the day. The crowd had thinned, and the average age of the people swimming in the wave pool became noticeably younger as the day wound down. The kids and teenagers still splashed and screamed, but fatigue had set in, and the energy level in the wave pool had died down. He hadn't even had to jump in and pull out any drowning kids in the last two hours. He had changed into a white sleeveless T-shirt to protect his skin from getting even more sunburned.
From the loud speakers came an announcement, âAttention, guests. The time is now 5:55 PM. Thrill River will be closing in five minutes.â
Thank God, Johnny thought. He had stood on different points of this ledge all afternoon, and the time seemed to drag on forever. This afternoon had felt longer than the longest school day as he stood alone with his thoughts and came down from the pot he had smoked with Brady and Jennifer. He replayed the day's events over in his head again. The look of betrayal and horror on Cyndi's face was crystal clear in his memory, and it gnawed on his conscience all afternoon.
You fucked up big this time. What were you thinking? he scolded himself internally. How am I ever gonna convince her to talk to me again? How can I ever convince her to let me explain, or give me a second chance?
That awful, heartbroken look on Cyndi's face had burned into his brain. Then, before he could even blink, she had pushed down Jennifer and started pounding her face in. He was still completely stunned about that. Could that really have been Cyndi actually beating the shit out of someone else?
When Cyndi ran off he had tried to rush after her, but he tripped in the underbrush. His head had still been swimming uncontrollably. Christie and Eddie could only stare at him in disbelief. He did not look like the old Johnny, the nice guy they had known and grown up with. The old Johnny had been a loyal friend who could let loose, but usually stayed on the side of caution. The new Johnny in front of them was high on drugs and disoriented, the new Johnny had kissed a girl who wasn't his girlfriend.
Brady had partied enough to build up a major tolerance to pot. He was still high, but he settled back into a mature, adult persona easily. He gently helped Jennifer to her feet as she fought off the last of her tears.
âI gotta get her over to the infirmary,â he said without the slightest hint of his usual attitude. âSave me some of that food,â he added over his shoulder as an afterthought. He pushed some of the low tree limbs out of their way, and they quickly disappeared from sight.
âI'm gonna go back and find my friends again.
