Crane

Now, let’s flourish something really fun using our new value exercises! This is a gray crowned crane from Africa. There are lots of shapes and light and dark parts in this beautiful bird, but don’t let it intimidate you. We’ll take it step by step, shape by shape, and flourish part by part.

STEP 1

On the left are the basic strokes and sections that I came up with. Don’t worry about getting everything perfect unless you’re an ornithologist!

Let’s section out the lightest and darkest parts. I’d say the head and top wing would be a 5, followed by the tail and legs.

And yes, I did change the position of the legs—I think it looks more poised and refined. Don’t be afraid to change details. You’re the artist!
