CHAPTER 42: GREG

Like a Monopoly player rolling the right number or drawing the right card, Greg Carson, frantic father-to-be and ice-cream currier, did pass Go. After stopping briefly at his temporary home, where Joe and Polly Mays, sitting on the porch, handed him a bouquet of roses and told him what had happened, he drove Impala Two past Go and every other property that lined the route between the mansion and Boulder General Hospital.

According to Joe and Polly, who had volunteered to remain at the house, Adam had tried to reach Greg twice by calling the people who owned and operated the Alpine Valley Creamery in Greeley. On each occasion he failed to reach anyone.

Greg pondered the differences between 1962 and 2017 as he honked his way through an intersection and raced toward his destination. Though he liked much about the early sixties, he did not like its technological deficiencies. At four o'clock on this otherwise slow and uneventful October day, he had never pined more for a cell phone.

Two minutes later, Greg reached the hospital, entered the crowded parking lot, and pulled into the first empty spot he saw. He did not even bother to look for a handicap parking sign or a white wheelchair stenciled on the asphalt. He knew that the Americans with Disabilities Act and all that followed was still twenty-eight years away.

He grabbed the bouquet, climbed out of the Chevy, and ran across the parking lot like a man carrying the Olympic torch. Though he knew a second here and a second there would not change anything in the grand scheme of things, he ran. He wanted to reach his wife before another moment of this momentous day slipped through his fingers.

Greg entered the hospital, a brick edifice on the north end of town, and asked the first receptionist he saw for directions to the maternity ward. When he received the directions, along with an I've-seen-this-a-million-times smile, he skipped the elevator and raced up several flights of stairs to the third floor and a hopefully joyous reunion.

Greg did not slow down, in fact, until he entered a hallway that stretched the length of the medical facility and offered access to several private rooms. Halfway through his journey from one end of the hallway to the other, he passed two restrooms, a nurses' station, and what looked like a large waiting room. He needed only a second to see that nine of the twenty or so people in the chamber were his housemates at the Chautauqua Chateau.

Adam and Bridget, who held Camille, grinned at the late arrival. So did Nick, Natalie, and the twins, who sat together along the far wall. Only Jack and Gladys, who stood in the middle of the room holding foam coffee cups, greeted him with normal smiles.

"She's waiting for you, son," Jack said. "So is someone else. Just mosey on down to the end of the hallway. I think you'll find what you're looking for in Room 322."
