INTERNET MADAM
The late 1990s saw prostitution move indoors. Certainly the street walkers were still plying their trade with a steady supply of customers. But I started noticing fewer and fewer hustlers waving down passing cars. What once was a thriving business in certain areas now lent itself to maybe a girl or two working, with some nights finding nary a one advertising herself in plain view for neighbors, customers, and cops to see.
The advent of the Internet changed the face of prostitution in Omaha. Now instead of having to hit the street, girls could safely advertise on various websites, being seductive and imaginative with their offers yet knowing just how far to go not to incriminate themselves.
Escort services popped up overnight, offering female companionship for upward of $200 to $300 per hour. Although no explicit sex acts were mentioned, the online profiles were just seductive enough to tantalize all types of men who never before considered such an experience. Now instead of being seen driving in prostitution-infested area, Johns could go online and find a picture and profile of various girls to suit their tastes.
Pimps went from guys lurking on the streets watching their “bitches” to entrepreneurs who stayed behind the scenes, updating websites and arranging dates for their ever-growing pool of job applicants. Escort girls and their handlers were making much more money than they ever could just standing on a street corner in downtown Omaha. And some girls made money just by agreeing to go on a date with customers, with no sex happening.
The most common advice escort company owners were telling their girls was, “I’m not telling you to screw the guy. What you do is up to you. You just have to bring me back $200 for the date.” This way the flesh-peddler could plead ignorance in the event his working girl was caught in a sting set up by police.
We Vice cops were forced to change our ways in making cases on these girls. With a street walker, all we had to do was get her in the car, make the deal, and we were done. With online hook-ups the girls required customers to call them, leaving caller identification numbers on the receiving end. Vice cops couldn’t keep calling from the same numbers or else word would spread in the call-girl network.
Customers were required to show identification prior to any conversation even beginning between the two. To the escort girls, seeing a driver’s license was a sense of security that the customer was not a cop. After all, would a cop advertise his full name and home address? That’s why fake drivers’ licenses had to pass the smell test.
Most meetings were in motel rooms. Frequently the girls would show up with an enforcer to check the John out to make sure he wasn’t a cop or a serial rapist. First impressions meant a lot to the girl and the guy who was watching her back. If something did not seem right with the guy, the deal was off.
