Chapter 11
âRozaaaaa!â Penelope squealed, but now her voice sounded distinctly happy.
When I zoomed out, I saw the gnomes walking toward the fire with tools. They had small shovels in their hands and what appeared to be large iron chisels, and Nissa had the baby in her arms.
âOh, my gods,â Nicola gasped as she settled back down onto the ground with her hand over her heart.
âPenelope, my heart is pounding in my chest,â Aleia chided the other priestess. âDonât yell like that!â
âSorryâ Penelope stood up and ran over to where the gnomes had arrived at the camp.
âWilfrim, Elowise, Balabar, hello, how are you?â the naiad asked breathlessly as lavender spots spread on her cheeks. âNissa, I see youâve brought Roza with youâ¦â
âYes, I did,â the young gnome woman said, but her voice was solemn. âI think Wilfrim needs to talk to you, though.â
âWhat is it?â Penelopeâs eyes widened.
Something in Nissaâs voice had apparently set off alarm bells for the naiad, and I felt the hairs stand up on my phantom arms, too.
âI think I saw something in the woods,â Wilfrim wheezed as he put his hand to his heart. âWe rushed right over.â
âDid you really?â Nicola asked as she stood up and walked over to the group. âWhat was it?â
âWell, it was more of a sense than anything else,â the old man explained. âWhen we were coming here, I had a feeling something-- or someone-- was tracking us through the woods that run along the road.â
âI felt it, too,â Balabar cut in. âIâm fairly certain there was something there. My senses are never wrong.â
Shit.
âI think youâre going to need to check it out,â I told the women. âIt may be nothing, but something has me feeling like there could be a problem.â
âMe too,â Aleia admitted.
âWhat did Jack say?â the younger gnome man asked as he stared from priestess to priestess with a slightly crazed look in his eyes. âCan he help us?â
âYou look so concerned.â Penelope shivered. âBut of course, Jack can help.â
âWeâre spooked after seeing the goblins,â Elowise admitted. âI hope they arenât back.â
I zoomed out to the area between the gnome camp and the convent with my God Vision, but despite the fact that I could see every inch of the ground, looking around was slow, and I didnât know if there was time to waste. I couldnât see anything but the normal rustling of the trees in the breeze, but I knew the goblins were small and presumably sneaky. I made one last futile effort to catch a glimpse of the creaturesâ telltale reddish-pink bodies, but I realized I was going to have to get the women moving while I kept up my watch.
âIâll keep looking around, but we need to prepare for the worst,â I warned the three women. âGo ahead and arm yourselves.â
âWeâre going to get our weapons,â Nicola said as she looked at the gnomes with a steady expression. âTry to stay calm. We promised to protect you, and we will.â
