Sam slung the load of hanging clothes over his shoulder and shoved the car door shut with his hip. Once upstairs, it took only a few minutes to hang them in the area of the closet Moira had cleared for him.

She had made it too easy for him to move in, and he felt like a goldbricker for doing so little.

When a knock came at the door, he sauntered over to answer it, and Tim barged past him and into the apartment, saying, “The DA has dropped the murder charge. They don’t have the evidence to back it up, and the judge has thrown it out. But he was with the side piece when Jonathan was killed, and the woman backs him up. And his cell location confirms it. The embezzlement charges stand, though. They’ve reinstated dad’s bail and he’s gone home.”

Sam shut the door and went into the kitchen. He opened the fridge and removed two beers, then wandered back into the living room. “How does Jennell feel about him coming home?” He handed Tim a beer and sat down on the couch.

“I don’t know. She left when they froze Dad’s accounts and news of the side piece came out. She’s gone to her mother’s.”

“So much for standing by her man,” Sam quipped. “So is the old bastard sitting at the house alone, or has he moved in with the side piece?”

“He’s alone.”

Sam bit back the bitter laugh. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving guy.

Tim nodded and took a healthy swig of his beer. “He’s going to prison for what he did, and his property will be sold to make as much restitution as possible.”

How many times had his father held the threat of disowning them over their heads to get his way? Although he had disowned Sam long ago, right after the “fuck you” episode. “There goes your inheritance, bro,” Sam quipped.

Tim laughed. “I figured he’d go through it long before I ever got it, so I don’t really care. Where’s Moira?”

“She’s run out to help one of the secretaries from school about a school issue.”

Tim’s gaze fastened on the framed commendations. “I hope you show her the appropriate appreciation. It looks like she’s gone way out of her way to make you feel at home around here.”

“Yeah, she has.”

“While you were gone on your last deployment, she did another fundraiser and painted several paintings. Mom and I called to check on her, and Mom got her to come over a couple of times.”

“I appreciate that. I worry about her being alone so much. But she’s made friends with someone at work, Maggie, and they went shopping together for the wedding. And we had Maggie and her boyfriend over for dinner. You’d like Abe. He’s an engineer. Really sharp. Maggie’s agreed to be her maid of honor.”

“I’m glad to see her coming out of her shell.”

“She doesn’t trust very easily.”

Tim’s expression turned grave. “Trevor didn’t help.”

“No.”

“How’d you get her to trust you?”

Sam was silent a moment. She’d been so unbelievably open and sexually needy that first night.
