As Arial rode home after the social with Steve, she found that she had actually enjoyed herself. Steve Fisk wasn’t Bryn Evans, but he was nice and seemed totally smitten with her. Dancing was awkward because she’d never done it before, but he had graciously placed the fault on his own clumsiness.

After they stopped at the house and before he pulled back the wool blanket that covered their laps, Steve turned to Arial and surprised her when he asked, “Arial, I admit to being overwhelmed. Would you grant me the honor of calling on you?”

Arial paused then sighed and answered, “Yes, Steve. You may call on me.”

Steve smiled then surprised her again when he leaned forward and kissed her.

Arial thought the sensation was wet and odd but recognized its significance after he leaned back and said, “Thank you, Arial. You’ve made me the happiest man in Nebraska Territory.”

She was unsure of how she should reply, so she said, “It’s the way it’s supposed to be; isn’t it? I’d better get into the house before my mother and sister wonder what we’re doing out here.”

“Oh, yes, of course,” Steve said before he threw off the blanket and awkwardly exited the buggy and trotted around the back to help Arial out.

After waving goodbye to Steve, who kissed her again on the porch, Arial entered the house and was met by her mother who asked her how she’d enjoyed the social.

As Arial was removing her heavy coat, she told her mother that Steve Fisk would be calling on her which made Anna Driscoll a very happy mother.

Arial then went upstairs to her room and knew she’d have to tell Gwen tomorrow, but felt an urgent need to write in her diary. She had just taken the first official step in the new direction in her life.

Before she started writing, she removed Bryn’s portrait from her dresser and slid it into her bottom drawer.

Captain Amos Baker entered the officers’ quarters, spotted Bryn at the table oiling his pistols and headed his way.

Bryn heard his footsteps, turned and asked, “What can I do for you, glorious captain and leader of men?”

Amos snickered then replied, “Our illustrious colonel wants to see you in his office.”

Bryn wiped the gun oil from his hands with a rag and asked, “Do you know what it’s about?”

“Nope. But I do know that we’re finally going back to war now that we’ve wintered in this wonderful sanctuary. Maybe they’re going to make you a captain.”

“I doubt it,” Bryn said as he set his guns back into his duffle bag then belted on his saber and pulled on his hat before unnecessarily saluting Amos and leaving the large room.

As he crossed the busy parade grounds where they’d drilled and exercised the men over the seemingly endless winter after the battle to hold Corinth, he wondered why the colonel would want to talk to him. He hadn’t received a word of news from home over the past few months,
