Chapter Eight

Lisha was hiding. He couldn’t stand having lunch in the mess hall when everyone was talking about the latest attack. The Saganto clan had once again targeted a smaller clan, and there had been no survivors. Everyone was gone, and there was nothing Lisha or anyone else could do to help them. So many lives were cut short just because the Saganto clan wanted power.

It wasn’t fair.

Lisha knew that eventually he’d have to come out of the infirmary. His friends would no doubt wonder what had happened to him. He and Gideon had made a point of eating lunch together as often as they could since their first kiss in the garden, so he would, too. It wasn’t that Lisha didn’t want to see them. It was more that he was overwhelmed and felt powerless, and he didn’t know how to deal with that.

He was a healer. His job was to help people in need, but in this case, there was nothing he could do. Even if he’d been allowed to go to the destroyed clan, there were no survivors for him to heal.

He didn’t think he’d ever hated anyone, but he hated the Saganto clan. At this point, he didn’t even care that some of the members were probably good people who were forced to do what they were doing because otherwise they would die. Wouldn’t it be better to die than to kill innocent dragons? To take babies away from their parents and raise them in pain and hate? He didn’t know how the Saganto clan dragons could live with themselves, and he didn’t think he would ever understand it.

The sound of footsteps running toward the infirmary got him to his feet. He was used to the urgency. Being a healer, people ran to get him every time an accident happened, and with so many dragons living together, it happened often. Lisha had already grabbed his bag and was ready to go by the time the guard burst into the infirmary.

The guard looked around, their focus stopping on Lisha, who was moving toward them.

“What is it?”

“We’re bringing in a male.”

Lisha nodded and put down his bag. It probably wasn’t as bad as he’d feared if the dragon could be moved. “What happened?”

“We don’t know. He’s in bad shape, though.”

“Who is he?”

The guard shook their head. “I don’t know.”

It didn’t make sense. Even though there were many Ogorth clan members, most of them knew each other, at the very least by sight. The guards especially kept an eye on everyone, so why wouldn’t this one know who the wounded dragon was?

The dragon couldn’t have come from the latest destroyed clan. There’d been no survivors, so it wasn’t possible. It didn’t sound like he was an Ogorth clan member, either.

Who did that leave?

There were more footsteps, and Lisha focused on getting everything ready. Luckily, the infirmary was never empty, and the nurses were a great help. They got one of the beds ready, and Lisha rushed toward the hurt dragon as soon as he was carried into the infirmary.
