Fred packed what he needed under the tarp in the back of his truck. Then he walked out to the equipment shed. He thought about driving the combine and the tractor into the side of the house before he lit it up, but he decided against that. It was only fitting that the fire the cartel had started took the equipment. He parked both outfits as near the super-heated slag pile as he could, and walked back to the house.

He looked anxiously at his watch. He had nearly seven hours to kill before blast-off. He thought about trying to sleep but knew that would be futile. Instead, he walked into the house and picked up his fishing gear. Fall fishing was always the best. He might as well get in one last outing before he left.

He caught a big cutthroat on his first cast. He almost tossed it back in the stream, and then instead, he slipped his fingers beneath its gills, killed it, and laid it on the grass beside him. He needed to eat before he left, and he hadn’t had a chance to eat trout since the last time he and Shane had gone fishing.

Looking down at the blood on his hands, his demons swirled around him. The Stooges would be alone on the mountain. Killing them would be child’s play. Then a vision of the deep mine shaft flashed through his brain. It was perfect. The Stooges would simply disappear. There’d be no witnesses, and nobody would ever find their bodies.
