Dead in the Water

Tina

The click of the cabin door roused me from a deep and satisfying sleep. I stretched and opened my eyes and my stomach rolled as I remembered with whom I’d spent the night.

Thanking the universe for the small favor of Ian having an early rehearsal, I sprang from the bed and found my robe as my logical side launched into a lengthy lecture on the rest of my body’s lack of critical thinking skills.

According to the nagging voice bleating in my skull, I lacked both judgment and self-preservation instincts and I deserved whatever might be coming by way of heartaches. Since it was my conscious ranting, I could hardly argue, though I did counter with the excuse that Ian and I were talking about the things that derailed our relationship two years ago and that, all things considered, I was hopeful we were both more mature and could sustain a healthy and balanced relationship this time around.

I shuffled into the living room and made myself a cup of tea without encountering my father, a small gift for which I was deeply grateful. Regardless of my gratitude, I’d expected to see Dad. I texted him and then headed for the shower.

Dressed and ready for the day, I’d still had no word from Dad. It’d been early when Ian left, not even seven o’clock, and I doubted that my dad would have done the same. However, a quick look around the suite and the sun deck left me puzzled.

I tracked down the floor’s butler, but he’d not seen any sign of my father either. Since my dad had been in the habit of doing sunrise yoga on the private deck and then relaxing with his coffee every morning, I got a little worried and checked his room. His bed showed no signs of having been used. That amped up my concern, though I told myself he’d just stayed the night with Nikki.

I fired off another text, plus one to Ian as I walked to the elevator but then I remembered that we’d be docking in St. Maarten in a few hours, and I had made plans to spend the day on the beach with KC. A quick debate with myself ended with me deciding to just come back to the room to change and gather my beach gear. I did shoot off another text though; I was kind of surprised KC hadn’t confirmed our plans.

I was standing in line at the coffee shop when my phone blew up with messages. Ian confirmed he was going to be tied up getting ready for the evening’s concert and KC said she’d meet me at the gate at ten o’clock. Still no word from Dad.

Tea and Danish in hand, I decided to eat in the theater. I was concerned about having no word from Dad and I also had neglected to tell either him or Ian my plans for the day. I held my chocolate croissant in my mouth and pulled the door to the Starlight theater open.
