Chapter 9

ANDRE

I stand in front of the familiar small brick house with my hands in my pockets. The Uber already pulled away, so my only options are to follow through on this dumb-ass idea or call the car back and feel like a complete moron for wasting time and money coming out here to begin with.

This plan felt brilliant an hour ago when I was leaving the gym, but now I’m wondering if I’ve lost my damn mind. What good can come from knocking on my ex’s door and asking him to dissect our relationship?

If you figure out where you went wrong, it might mean you have a chance at making things work with Xeno, a little voice in my head points out. Yup, that was it. That was the logic that got my ass in an Uber after twelve hours at the gym and brought me out to the city suburb I once called home, if only very briefly.

“Fuck it,” I mutter, taking a breath and pushing myself to take a step forward, then another, making my way slowly up the cracked sidewalk that leads up to the modest house I looked at years ago and thought I could make my own.

It looks like Jake, or maybe his new boyfriend, planted some tomatoes in the front garden, and he finally got around to replacing the rusted screen door. Maybe I should revisit the idea of buying a place outside the city. The gym brings in enough money that my savings account is more than comfortable. But it’s hard to see the point in taking on a commute just to end up living out here in an empty house all by myself.

I open the storm door and rap my knuckles against the heavy inside door that looks like it’s been freshly painted since I’ve been here last, which was… Fuck, I don’t even know. Two years?

The booming bark of a dog answers my knock, followed by Jake’s muffled voice saying, “Robbers don’t come to the house during the day, Zeus, please have a little sense.”

I choke back a laugh just before the door swings open. Jake’s smile is bright but falls quickly as he registers that I’m standing on his doorstep.

“Dre?” He frowns. “Is everything okay?”

“Yeah, sorry to show up unannounced like this.” I rub my hand along the back of my neck and shift my weight from one foot to the other, once again questioning the wisdom of this plan. I give him a quick once-over out of habit. He’s wearing a baseball shirt stretched tightly across his chest, his massive biceps straining the sleeves, a pair of jeans with a hole over one knee—come to think of it, they might have belonged to me at one point—and a backward baseball cap. It doesn’t look like much has changed. “You look good.”

A stocky Rottweiler pushes between his legs, and he snags it by the collar before it can rush out of the house and either attack me or lick my face—I can’t tell if it’s made up its mind yet.
