‘That Logan’s a real asshole,’ is Sam Harris’s blunt prognosis, as more locals stream into O’Shea’s laughing. A band sets up in the corner. The friends have progressed to spirits by now.

‘That’s why I need to ask you to find this guy Red’s contacts over in Miami,’ Rolle explains. ‘You know the lay of the land over there. This smacks of trafficking… your patch. Heard of him?’

Sam shakes his head. ‘I’ll ask around. There’s been a lot of restructuring since we clamped down on a few of the usual routes. But every time, those bastards find a new way to bring stuff in. It’s relentless.’

Sam has the same propensity to get to the bottom of things as Antonio. He knows he’ll be back with something.

‘His brother Kata is involved with him, and a girlfriend called Lottie. We think they’ve been bringing drugs and girls into Miami. I need to know for who.’

The band has started soundchecks. Rolle leans forward, tries to speak above the synthesised twangs.

‘There’s another girl missing too, and I promised her mother I’d find her.’

Sam raises an eyebrow.

‘Oh Tony, you are going to get your heart broken,’ he says, grim-faced. ‘It’s the very best thing about you, how much you care, but you have to stop taking everything so goddamn personally.’

Rolle shrugs.

‘Saviour complex, I guess you’d call it.’ He smiles dryly. But they’re both thinking the same thing.

Sam had also lost his mother to cancer. Something they’d bonded over in the early days of investigations when they were paired up. He’d been older than Antonio when it happened, just fifteen at the time. But the mother-shaped hole in their early lives lingered into adulthood.

Sam says something else about Logan, but they were too many whiskey-sodas in by then. Rolle tries to make a point of remembering. He knows it’s important.

A while later, a text pings through. It’s Logan: Meet me in the morning 8 a.m. at Marla’s. I’ve something important to discuss with you.

Rolle only notices then the five missed calls from Alice. It’s better to talk face to face, he tells himself, feeling like the coward he knows he is. He turns to the barman and indicates with a flick of his wrist, that they’ll have two more Jameson’s please. Yes, doubles.

The guitar strums mournfully on.
