Larry and I moved to California on April Foolâs Day, which still makes me chuckle. It was the right, light-hearted, giddy day to start life in the bright sun.
We brought our families with us. Elysa, of course â transitioning to having a stepfather had been difficult for her even though she had known Larry before, when he was living across the street from us. I knew transitioning to a new state was a lot to ask of her, but eventually the sunshine and other advantages of California helped her settle a little bit.
Victor and Stephen were still in school, which I still felt guilty about. Wealthy people put their children in boarding schools all the time; somehow it never occurred to me that it was okay for me to do the same. The boys didnât seem to mind that theyâd be flying to California on a regular basis, though.
Larryâs parents also came out on the plane with us and moved into an apartment not far away from our home. A couple of years later my parents joined the California party, too.
But best of all, the year after Larry and Elysa and I settled into Encino, my sister and her husband moved to L.A., too. So my old book of clients was split up after all, but the most important thing was that my best friend wasnât a continent away from me anymore. I had called Mildred and David so many times, promoting California like I was an advertising agency. At last my campaign worked. David had just closed his business and he decided to seek new opportunities in California instead of New York.
I tried to convince my brothers to come, too, Harvey and Martin, but they both owned piece goods companies in New Yorkâs Garment District, so moving wasnât such a desirable prospect for them. Harvey actually came out to visit and check it out, but one of his first days there he came back to our house and walked in the door saying, âWhat a crazy state!â
âWhatâs the matter?â I asked.
âI gotta wait on the corner for the light to change before I can cross! I donât have time for that. I canât make it in California, too slow for me!â
There were also two people who felt like family who I couldnât bring with us, either: Earl and Irma. Saying goodbye to Earl wrenched me terribly. If not for him, I wouldnât be where I am.
