Paul woke alone in his bed and frowned. He never slept so soundly that he would miss someone leaving the bed. He used the bathroom and tried to ignore the sense of dread he felt as he left his room.

Brains wasn’t in the living room or the kitchen, nor had he gone out to the garage. Paul looked up the stairs and frowned. He wouldn’t have climbed them alone, would he?

Then he heard a guitar being strummed from upstairs.

Paul found Brains in Bowie’s room, playing an acoustic guitar. He didn’t recognize the tune, but it immediately captured his attention. The minor chords were haunting, and yet beckoning. He leaned against the doorjamb so he could watch without disturbing the genius at work.

Brains sat on the ottoman in Bowie’s room, playing his Fender acoustic. He’d slipped on a ripped-to-shreds black T-shirt over the black gym shorts he’d had on the night before.

A ripple of desire spread through Paul as he remembered what it felt like to run his hands over Brains, how they moved together, how their hands had worked as one to bring Brains to his climax. He shivered when he thought of how good it would have been to taste him, to stare up at him from between his thighs and feel—

“Did I wake you?”

Brains had stopped playing but hadn’t turned around.

“No. I just wanted to make sure you were okay.”

Brains sighed and set the guitar to the side. “I woke up thinking about everything, and I just needed to play. I hope that’s okay.”

“Yeah, sure it is. I’m sorry.”

Brains turned and grinned at him. “It’s okay. I didn’t want to wake you. You looked so peaceful.”

“I hope I didn’t keep you up as much last night. I tried to think small.”

“You were perfect. Hey, mind if I work for a bit? I just have some ideas—”

“No problem. I’ll fix us some breakfast.”

Brains smiled and nodded, but he seemed far away, and he didn’t come downstairs, not for a long time. Paul put his plate of food in the microwave and went to work out. Then he took a shower. Then he was killing time in his own house, and that was weird.

Brains seemed preoccupied and could have had any number of things on his mind—his appointment tomorrow, the band being gone… what had happened between them the night before. Paul hated that he even had to worry about how Brains was feeling, but he knew what he was getting into by crossing that line. Brains was in a rough spot, and a sane person wouldn’t try to start a relationship with someone in his situation. Yet Paul had allowed his feelings to get the better of him.

“Paul? Hey, sorry, I lost track of time. You okay?”

Paul was leaning against the sink, tightly gripping the counter, and who fucking knew how long the water had been running. He shut it off, took a deep breath, and turned around.

“Yeah. I was going to run to the store. You need anything?”

Brains swung himself across the kitchen and stopped in front of Paul.
