In the final version of the text, after Pasolini’s publisher had insisted he make changes to avoid censorship, Pasolini changed this scene to the following: “Toward midnight, unable to sleep and wired up from the wine, Lenzetta threw off the old patched-up sheets and began to sing. His brother was sleeping like a log, mouth half-open and sheets crumpled between his legs, but after a while he started to show signs of irritation, until suddenly he turned over, pulling all the sheets under his stomach. Completely drunk, Lenzetta went on singing at the top of his voice. His brother woke with a start and said, ‘Hey?’ ‘Fuck off,’ answered Lenzetta, getting to his feet. His brother realized what was going on, gave him a push that flattened him against the wall, and dozed off again.” In this version, however, it is hard to understand why Lenzetta’s brother would react as violently as he does the following morning; for this reason the translator has decided to return to Pasolini’s original text.
