CHAPTER 12

It proved easy enough to determine that the Bredas were re-armed and re-fuelled immediately after returning from a sortie.

“Early morning seems the best time, then,” offered Gus. “Generally, the air crews have their breakfast at eight and make it last a good hour. Your engineer and I can run over to the leading aircraft, start her up, then get the thing airborne as quick as we can. Hopefully I can hit the other pair with machine guns, drop bombs on the runway, then make my escape down to Crete. What about the guards?”

“I’ll have men surround them,” replied Yannis. “I assume they’ll spring into action once they spot you or hear the engine start up. We’ll open fire as soon as they move. Once our man is back with us, we’ll get out quickly and leave it to you. Will the Italians try to intercept you afterwards?”

“They’re likely to report it by radio and call in a fighter or two to try to get me.”

“They won’t. We’ll hit the radio control room with a grenade attack.”

“Sounds risky.”

“Maybe.”

“Then don’t do it on my account. I’ll disappear to the east at low level, over towards the mainland, and I’ll make sure they see me go that way. They won’t see when I turn south; I doubt they’d ever guess that’s the direction I’ll be heading in. They won’t know I’m English until Sartori works it out. I’ll take my chance, Yannis.”

“You are a brave man,” said the Greek.

“So are you. You and your men are running a big risk, fighting the Italians the way you do…”

“And women, Bouncer.”

“Of course. If they ever catch you…”

“I know.”

“Why do you do it?” Gus asked.

“Greece is my country. This is my island. I was born and bred in Gouvia and I’ll fight to get it back.”

“That’s how my cousin Staś feels. He’s Polish and his country has been divided between the Nazis and the Russians. He fights in the skies above England for a free Poland.”

“That’s a similar situation. Nationalism. But there’s more to it than nationalism…”

Gus waited for him to carry on. Helena arrived with coffee.

“He means we’re communists,” she said.

“Yes,” said Yannis. “Our group, the Communist Party of Greece, dominates the resistance here on Corfu. But we are working with other left-wing parties to form a National Liberation Front.”

“What other parties?”

“The Socialists, the Agricultural Party and the People’s Party.”

“And what will you do once the Italians have been defeated?” asked Gus.

“Fight the Germans,” said Helena, who had sat down with them.

“You know what I mean.”

“We’ll carry on fighting for socialism and a communist Greece,” said Yannis. Helena nodded her support.

Gus was gazing up at three dots in the sky; they were becoming larger and taking on the shape of birds. The he realised what they were and at the same time heard the droning noise of the engines. It must be the Bredas. He pointed to them and shouted, “We’re under attack! Yannis, get your men under cover!”

The Greeks couldn’t be calmed. Angered
