Chapter 18
Two months after Claireâs eighteenth birthday, the doors to her home for the last ten years opened and she stepped outside. It was raining quite heavily, but this did nothing to dampen her spirits. All she had dreamed of since the day she arrived was this, of getting out. She had been subjected to an intense programme of rehabilitation, tests, and questionnaires almost on a daily basis. Having to sit in group and private therapy sessions, the same question asked again and again.
Why?
And just like the time when she had been arrested for the crime, her response was the same. A shrug of the shoulders. Fake tears. Begging to go home to her mum and dad, promising it wouldnât happen again. But she soon learned it wasnât going to work. There were other kids there, some slightly older, who had been there for years, and they had tried the same approach. She learned very quickly she wasnât going anywhere and if she got into any kind of trouble there was not much chance of her being released early either. Some of the other kids got into fights. Two boys got into a big fight and one of them had his arm broken, the other boy twisting it so far up his back it snapped. The boy, being over ten years old, was subsequently sent to juvenile prison. This was not going to happen to Claire.
As she got older, she learned to manipulate the therapists to her benefit, telling them what they wanted to hear. She even told them she wanted to write a letter to the Forsythâs, apologising for what she did. Her therapist thought it a brilliant idea and allowed her to do so, so she wrote twoâone apologising profusely for killing Tania and another she kept hidden under her blanket in which she taunted them, asking them how it felt to have their lives turned upside down, to feel complete and utter desolation at so much abuse and horror entering their lives. She asked them if they thought they deserved it, because she thought they did. And that when she was released she would kill the rest of them too. But she never sent the letter. All her hard work and playing the remorseful child would be for nothing.
And now, here she was. Freedom was finally hers.
âTake care of yourself, Claire,â said her therapist before she left.
âOh, I will. I most certainly will.â
She had been given money to catch the train back to the farm, and that was where she headed. The only condition was that she never head left into Belton and thus pass the Forsythâs property. If she wanted to leave the premises, she had to turn right towards Gorleston. If she failed to comply, it was back to prison. The real prison.
As she waited for the train to appear, heads turned her way, all from men. Claire had grown into an attractive young lady. She had not a blemish on her face, the scars
