Bones
"What the fuck?" I croak as I look up and see the sky. Something is wrong, it's too far away. I don't think it should be that far away. I try to sit up and instantly my entire body feels like it's being stuck with hot pokers.
"Fuck!" I roar and look down. I'm covered in debris. I can't see my legs or one of my arms. I use the free arm that I have and start pushing things off, but it's heavier than I realized. After a few shoves I free my other arm. There is a large dirty wooden plank that is almost stuck in through the middle of my bicep. My hand is twisted in completely the wrong direction and my fingers are broken on that hand except for the thumb.
It's going to be useless to me, but at least it's still attached. I sit up, fighting through the pain. I move my legs and am happy when I feel wood scraping against my shin. The shit hurts like a motherfucker, but I can feel it. That must mean I'm not paralyzed. This part is easier as the wood is so rotted through that it doesn't weigh much.
"Oh God! Help me! Help! Let me out! Let me out of here. I can't breathe!" I hear the woman screaming, but instead of my usual reaction of annoyance or excitement when someone is begging for their life, the true fear I hear in her voice sends me into overdrive. I know terror like that. I've heard it before. My own screams.
"Hey, you're okay. I'm here."
"Let me out! I'm stuck. I can't move it. I can't be in here. Please let me out. I can't breathe, I can't breathe." she screams and cries. I hear things begin shifting and wood cracking, but I don't know where she is. I do know the small patch of the sky that I could see disappears the closer I get to where I hear her. There is no hole in the roof over here and it's pitch black. I can't see anything, but small glimpses of wood. My legs hurt and my tailbone, but I'm moving. The deep cut in my arm is the most concerning, because I don't know if the wood piece has cut into an artery or not. I'm losing a lot of blood, but itâs not spurting. I don't want to move it though. If I can't move the wood then I can't set my arm. You'd be surprised at how fucking awkward it is to walk around with a hand that's hanging on you the wrong way.
"Hang on, don't push on anything." The last thing we need is for more of the foundation to fall on us.
"I can't. I can't." Her cries are lower, but the pain is more intense in her voice. "I'm scared. I'm so scared. I'm sorry." She cries and flashes of my childhood spring to my mind. This woman isn't talking to me anymore. She's fighting a battle that I can't see.
