“That would be fine,” the doctor says.

John smiles encouragingly.

“Thanks, John,” I say for the benefit of the doctor and the nurse. Once they’re gone I’ll tell him not to bother.

Doctor Evans pats my foot. “We’ll get you fixed up in no time.”

Chapter 7

John wouldn’t take no for an answer on the food. Said he knew a great place and that he’d bring me back something delicious.

Not too long after he left the techs came. They switch me to a rolling bed and wheel me down the hall.

As we go I watch the people around me. An older woman with thin white hair walks with a nurse and an IV drip stand. A man sits in a chair outside a room, clutching his hands together, rocking back and forth. He mumbles something indiscernible. Behind me I hear shouting and the techs stop. They are both male. One is tall and super buff. He looks like a linebacker, not part of the hospital staff.

He glances at me and then at the other tech. “Give me just a second, Emmett.” Emmett nods. The linebacker pats me on the shoulder. “I’ll be right back. Hold tight.”

“Sure,” I say, trying to twist around and see what all the ruckus is. I don’t have to though.

A few seconds later, my tech and three other guys hold a beat and bloodied guy. He’s writhing and shouting obscenities. They wrestle him into a room and strap him down. A nurse goes in with a needle and shoots it into his arm.

“Sir, what is your name?” I hear the linebacker ask.

“Fileze,” the guy responds with a slur.

My whole body tenses. Holy fuck. The mangled mess of a man is Fileze the Sleaze.

“What happened?”

“What does it look like, dumb fuck. I got the shit beat out of me. Can someone get me an aspirin? It feels like my head’s going to explode.”

“We’ve already given you something. It’ll kick in any second.”

The nurse walks out shaking her head. She glances at Emmett. The back of the guy’s head is practically gone and he’s swearing and asking for aspirin. He’s lucky to be alive.” She walks down the hall without waiting for a response.

Emmett looks over and shrugs. “Sorry you had to see that.”

I swallow the fear building in my stomach. Who did this? Not that I’m surprised. Fileze is an asshole. And assholes tend to attract other assholes.

Finally the linebacker comes back. “Let’s go.” He starts to push the cart and I get a view of Fileze.

He’s looking right at me. An eerie sneer coats his face. He lifts a hand to his throat and with his first finger slices it across his neck.

“You’re dead,” he mouths.

I clamp a hand over my lips, holding back the scream in my throat. Fileze thinks what happened to him is my fault.

“Don’t look,” Emmett says. He must think my reaction is to all the blood and the mangled body.

I turn away. What have I gotten myself into?
