Edith went to the sink to put water in the kettle for tea to accompany the cinnamon rolls. Out the misty window, she saw Noah sitting in the rain, his shoulders and head collapsed forward. Her whole body filled with an urgent ache. The way he hung his head broke her heart. She lifted a hand to knock on the window, to call him inside.

Come meet Milo. Sit at the table with us.

But, no.

That wasn’t right.

That wasn’t how it was supposed to be, as Milo had so bluntly pointed out. Noah wasn’t supposed to be a part of her life. The thought brought angry tears to her eyes.

“Edith, you all right?” Milo asked from behind her. She startled and looked down at the water overflowing the pot.

“Yeah,” she hurried to say while keeping her head turned away from him. “Just looking at this crazy rain.” She fiddled with the water, needing a moment to remove the hurt from her face. She peered back out the window, fighting the urge to call out to Noah.

With strained effort, she forced herself to drop her eyes. The ache roared in protest. Who cares if he’s a ghost? Invite him in. Make it work. She pressed her teeth together and stepped away from the sink. After a difficult breath, she said to Milo, “Do you want one or two rolls?”

Milo clicked his tongue. “Amateur. Just put the whole platter in front of me, please.”

Edith dutifully shook her head. “Good thing you have all those muscles to burn calories.”

“Where’s Noah?” Milo looked around the room and back into the hall.

Edith stiffened, turned away again to go to the plate cupboard. “He probably went out to the barn. Don’t worry—I’ll talk to him later. But let’s eat and catch up.”

“Sounds good to me. We need a strategy for this ambush dinner. There’s something I need to tell you and Dad.”

“What?” Edith looked at him as he shifted uncomfortably in his chair. She felt a pulse of instinct. “Don’t tell me you proposed to Faye already?”

Milo snorted. “No! No way.”

Edith waited a beat for him to expound. “Well, what then? Tell me now.”

Milo shook his head, serious. “No, I think it’ll be better if we wait.”

“Really?” A sense of unease crept into her heart.

“Yeah. Sorry.” Milo’s expression had her stomach twisting into a knot.

It’s something serious. What is it?

This day is not going as I planned.

“Are you okay?” she asked.

“Of course, yeah. It’s not me.”

“I don’t like this.”

“Please, just trust me,” Milo said, reaching for a roll. “It’ll be better to tell you when we are with Dad.

She let out an abrupt sigh. “Fine.”

Edith turned away from Milo and grabbed the plates. On her way back to the table, she paused at the sink, leaned forward, and looked out the window.

The porch stood empty; Edith shivered.
