CHAPTER
NINETEEN
As Kathleen walked back to the shanty, her mind raced. Chase was dead; now there was a black helicopter with professional soldiers.
Government? Freelancers? Something else? But why now? Who? None of this made sense.
When she left Iraq, she put all of that behind her. Chase talked about Simon and David. She knew she had to try to find them since it was her only lead.
She wasnât completely sure she could trust Simon, but she desperately wanted to.
By the time she arrived back at the shanty, she had decided the priority was to get her copy of the thumb drive, contact David, and then figure out the next step. It occurred to her that if they were after her, they were probably after David, too. She decided she should try to warn him the first chance she got.
She slowly stepped into the bullet-ridden shack. She looked on the floor and gasped.
NO BODY? Chase was gone! There was blood on the floor, but no Chase.
Chills rushed down her spine. Confusion clouded her vision.
She quickly exited the shack and spent what seemed like hours backtracking to the Jeep. The entire way she tried to make sense of Chaseâs body being gone and what it meant.
When she finally reached her Jeep, she was surprised to see the log that had been blocking the road had been moved and was now resting on the roadside. The Jeep had been pushed to the side as well. She looked around and hoped it was some good Samaritan. She got in the Jeep, revved the engine, turned the heat to high, and sped down the hill toward the supply store.
After a short drive, she parked behind a medium-sized wood building. Out front, the sign read, âWoodland Supply Store and Post Office.â It was a cross between sporting goods, food and groceries, a home, and a camping supply store. It was a real one-stop shop in the middle of nowhere, and it also served as the only post office around for those few who lived on the mountain and surrounding areas.
She killed the engine and stepped out. She left the AR-15 inside and stuffed the Glock in her waistband at the small of her back. She noted that all seemed quiet; not a soul in sight. It looked like a normal day at the supply store, not unlike a hundred other times she had been there. This time of year, it's mostly locals in the area. The tourist season was over for the year, and only a few hunting parties passed through.
She took the three steps up to the front porch and made her way to the entrance. As she opened the door her mouth dropped. The store was completely ransacked as if there had been a robbery and a struggle. She pulled the Glock from the small of her back, checking the aisles for Clint, the storekeeper.
Clint was a genuine mountain man, grown and raised in the area. He was in his early forties with longer black hair and a full beard, resembling Grizzly Adams.
