CHAPTER SIX

Sheriff Schnell’s good lady turned out to be almost as adept as Bridget when it came to culinary skills and she produced an excellent meal for Jack and the Holbys in the room behind the sheriff’s office. She even made a presentable bread and water dish for Aubrey Appleton, the prisoner. She took everything her husband said literally … or almost. In fact the bread and water dish was transmogrified into dripping toast with an egg which Aubrey Appleton pronounced as quite delicious!

‘What happens next?’ Snake Holby asked Jack while they were eating. Snake was clearly becoming as restless as a cat without a mouse or a dog without a bone to gnaw on.

‘Well now,’ Jack said, ‘I have a few more questions to ask that weird gunman in there. So I suggest you boys take a stroll around town. I’m sure there’s a lot to see out there, isn’t that so, Mr Schnell?’

Sheriff Schnell agreed that, indeed, there was a lot to see around the town.

Edward Joe Holby looked pleased, though not unduly impressed. ‘So, when do we get to talk to the prisoner ourselves?’ he asked.

‘I think you need to leave that to the law,’ Jack told him. ‘Just as soon as we’re good and ready we’ll tell you all we can. Why don’t you just walk right out to the end of town and back again? But I suggest you don’t tell anyone who you are or what your business is. Just mosey around and keep your ears and eyes to the ground. You might pick up some useful morsels of information out there.’

Snake nodded in agreement. The uncle and nephew weren’t exactly bosom pals but at least they appeared to be a little more tolerant towards one another since they were both on the same mission and Snake had instructed Edward Joe in the use of his Smith and Wesson.

When they had wandered off, Jack and Sheriff Schnell returned to Aubrey Appleton’s cell. The gangly youth was sitting on his bed with his legs stretched out looking a tad more relaxed.

When Jack entered the cell, the youth said, ‘Listen, Sheriff, I’ve been thinking on what you said and I know I’m in deep trouble here. I don’t want to hang for things I didn’t do. And I don’t want to get shot to death by Hank and the gang, either. So what do I do?’

‘Well, you turned yourself in when you could have lit out for the border or some place,’ Jack reminded him, ‘and if you spell out the whole story, you might just save your skinny neck. I can’t promise anything but honesty is always better than lying through your back teeth. So why don’t we go a little further along this particular trail?’

The young man shook his head in confusion; he wasn’t the brightest candle in the ballroom. ‘What trail would that be, Sheriff?’ he asked.

‘That would be the trail of truth and honesty,’ Jack replied. ‘Do you have any difficulty with that?’

‘No, I want to be straight up with you, Sheriff.
