âI donât get you.â
âIf you popped and went flat like a bad tire, The Doo wouldnât give much of a shit. Heâd just find himself a brand new lucky charm.â
âYou shouldnât talk like that! Him and meâs friends!â
âIâm your friend, too. More important, Iâm one of the coaches on this team. Iâm responsible for your welfare, and Iâll talk any goddam way I want, especially to a rook. And youâll listen. Are you listening?â
âIâm listening.â
Iâm sure he was, but he wasnât looking; heâd cast his eyes down and sullen red roses were blooming on those smooth little-boy cheeks of his.
âI donât know what kind of a rig youâve got under that Band-Aid, and I donât want to know. All I know is I saw it in the first game you played for us, and somebody got hurt. I havenât seen it since, and I donât want to see it today. Because if you got caught, itâd be you caught. Not The Doo.â
âI just cut myself,â he says, all sullen.
âRight. Shaving. But I donât want to see it on your finger when you go out there. Iâm looking after your own best interests.â
Would I have said that if I hadnât seen Joe so upset he was crying? I like to think so. I like to think I was also looking after the best interests of the game, which I loved then and now. Virtual Bowling canât hold a candle, believe me.
I walked away before he could say anything else. And I didnât look back. Partly because I didnât want to see what was under the Band-Aid, mostly because Joe was standing in his office door, beckoning to me. I wonât swear there was more gray in his hair, but I wonât swear there wasnât.
I came into the office and closed the door. An awful idea occurred to me. It made a kind of sense, given the look on his face. âJesus, Joe, is it your wife? Or the kids? Did something happen to one of the kids?â
He started, like Iâd just woken him out of a dream. âJessie and the kids are fine. But Georgeâ¦oh God. I canât believe it. This is such a mess.â And he put the heels of his palms against his eyes. A sound came out of him, but it wasnât a sob. It was a laugh. The most terrible fucked-up laugh I ever heard.
âWhat is it? Who called you?â
âI have to think,â he saysâbut not to me. It was himself he was talking to. âI have to decide how Iâm going toâ¦â He took his hands off his eyes, and he seemed a little more like himself. âYouâre managing today, Grannie.â
âMe? I canât manage! The Dooâd blow his stack! Heâs going for his two hundredth again, andââ
âNone of that matters, donât you see? Not now.â
âWhatââ
âJust shut up and make out a lineup card. As for that kidâ¦â He thought, then shook his head. âHell, let him play, why not? Shit, bat him fifth. I was gonna move him up, anyway.
