Confession

The next morning my nose followed the smell of bacon down the hallway. I was about to step into the kitchen until I heard my uncle’s voice. Instinctively, I pivoted back in order to cling to the wall. To most it would seem as if I were eavesdropping but really after hearing the crack in his voice as I approached, I couldn’t bear to interrupt.

“I don’t know. It’s…it’s just a hard thing to wrap my mind around. I mean even when my dad died I had some expectation of it. Parents are supposed to go first, right?” I heard his heavy sigh—a pause of a few seconds before he could continue. “Never did I imagine I’d have to watch my big brother lowered into the ground. Especially not this soon. I wish I could go back in time and warn my younger self that my time was more limited than I knew.”

I closed my eyes to the bitterness inside me that was desperate to wrap my arms around Sean. It was nearly impossible not to when I stood listening of another talking about the loss of their sibling.

“I wish I had done something. Forced him to have more check-ups. Made him eat healthier. Limited his beers. Just…something.”

My eyes opened as I heard a chair screech back across the floor.

“Hey…hey,” My uncle said in a soft whisper as if he was trying to get my mother to look up at him. “Don’t do that to yourself, Ang. This was not your fault. Never for a minute believe that it was. Besides you know Paul wouldn’t have gone to those check-ups. And he would have most sneaked beers while you weren’t watching anyways. The Morgan’s are a stubborn bunch.”

My mother let out a small exhaled laugh, “That they are.”

I let out a large exhale myself before finally pushing off the wall to peek around the kitchen and reveal only my upper half. They hadn’t taken notice of me yet and for that I was grateful as I looked on. My uncle stood inches from my mom with a small grin he was using to bring out her own as he reached his thumb up to wipe the tears from her cheek.

I grinned at the sight ready to turn around and head back to my room until my mom’s eyes shifted away and found me.

“Morning, baby!”

My uncle dropped his hand and turned around to follow her gaze as she blinked excessively to hide the tears.

“Morning,” I said.

She moved toward me with her arms out before wrapping them around me and kissing the top of my head. My uncle walked back over to his pushed out chair to sit as he looked up at me.

“Hey, Em. You sleep all right?”

“Yeah, for the most part. Not sure it’s fully sunk in yet,” I said.

He nodded in agreement.

“I know what you mean, kid.”

I shifted my gaze back over to my mother.

“Do you need me to do anything, mom? I can help with some arrangements.”

She smiled warmly at the suggestion “Thank you, sweetheart, but we’ve been handling them all morning.
